New Bowie single/album

"Where are we now" was released on iTunes at 5am this morning apparently. There's an album as well.

Have only heard a snatch of it - good so far but seems very melancholy. Not sure what this says about his alleged state of health etc - if it says anything at all.

It took me a while to decide whether it was a case of the single being rubbish, or a case of Bowie doing what Bowie does (ie. be a bit weird). After a bit of thought, I've decided that the above poster is indeed correct.

Bowie's biggest problem, for people of my era at least (aged 50) is that after The Holy Trinity (The Rise & Fall/Hunky Dory/Alladin Sane) nothing else gets close. The guy released 3 of the greatest albums in the history of music in succession, where does he go from there?

Plenty of good stuff for sure, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Scary Monsters, Let's Dance etc but if I met him tomorrow, all I'd want to talk about would be the early 70s.

Just my take on it.

Well as has been mentioned in the Celebrity Death 2013 thread, with the rumours about his health I think this may well be The Dame's curtain call.

I've listened to it a lot through out the day and I think its an outstanding release and so it would apppear do a lot of people on Itunes as it is the best selling track on there today.
It also shows how little talent the rest of the chart has when a 66 year old man (who might be at deaths door.) can blow everyone else into the weeds.

Sure he's made mistakes (Tin Machine, Never Let Me Down, the Bing Crosby Xmas single.) but there are very few musicians who have influenced our current culture & not just music, as much as he has.

I agree the man is a Legend and 70's music is his high point, however Bowie at sub optimal is most bands never to be achieved, I think you have to put your positive bias to one side and listen to this effort afresh.

I have heard the single twice, very unconvinced on 1st listen, 2nd time I was already engaged with the track.
Give it another go......

Yep, my interest in Bowie stops dead after Alladin Sane.

Mine certainly didn't. I loved Scary Monsters, his 4th best album imho. But still better than many other artists best albums. And certain tracks on Low, Station To Station and Let's Dance are great. I think Young Americans was commercially his most successful album, although apart from the title track, I didn't think it was great.

But my point is, even Scary Monsters, his 4th best album, is light years behind the Holy Trinity of Hunky Dory/Rise & Fall/Aladdin Sane. He was too good too early. The Michael Owen of music. He peaked too soon, and nothing else really lived up to what had gone before.
