Throttle cable and battery
Discussion
(Apologies to all those who've already seen this on the Yahoo group) The throttle cable on my recently-acquired MkII Escort-engined (I think, but see below) Geep (1300HC according to the rocker) had been bodged as a temporary repair so I tracked down a replacement on eBay at a reasonable price. It duly came, still in its packing, and clearly was for a MKII Escort 1300. It looked just like the one in the Haynes manual. Unfortunately, it didn't look like the one on my car. I assumed this was because the cable on the car had been "adapted" but there was no way the new one was going to fit. The cable on the car was longer, had a ball-joint fitting at the carb but not the pedal and did not have its own spring. The new one had a built-in spring and a ball joint fitting at both ends, as described in the manual. There is no way it can fit. Does anyone recognise what the cable that is presently on my Geep comes from? Earlier Escort? Anything else I have bought for the car (air filter, ignition parts) has fitted, which makes me think that it is the engine it claims to be (no engine number quoted on the log book).
Also, my car is down as a 1979 registration. There is no clamp holding down the battery. Is this illegal? My car got through its MoT like this, but I did wonder.
If anyone is breaking a Geep within a couple of hours' drive of central Scotland, can they get in touch, please. I'd like to build up a stock of spares (light lenses, throttle cables etc). Also, if someone wants the throttle cable I bought in error, get in touch. It's yours for the postage.
Thanks in anticipation,
Gregor

Just in case anyone else is in a similar situation I will give a shortened version of my answer on the Yahoo forum.
The cable is most likely a MK1 Escort unit as the MK1 usually had a slot in the top of the throttle pedal whereas the MK2 Escort had a ball link.
The 1300 HC marking on the rocker cover denotes the engine should be the High Compression variant of the 1300 crossflow unit.
The battery should be clamped down as this is actually classed as an MOT failure due to safety implications.
A suitable battery clamp is easily made. If required I can supply various diagrams of suitable units.
