I seem to have a RR chip in my ecu, what's involved in replacing it with a pucker Tvr one and will that chip need to be re mapped to my engine characteristics or just a straight swap? I have little knowledge in ecu tech, so any advice would be really appreciated, I'm sure I'll have an expert do it but still be nice to know what's really involved. Is this why people are always on rolling roads with comps in there hands, lol. Re chipping / re mapping go hand in hand I assume?

Whats is involved ! it`s going to cost you around £800 .

What is wrong with the RR chip .. what is a RR chip?

You seem to have a similar spec engine similar to my old spec 4.6.

I have a modded Lucas ECU, (by Austec Racing) that I no longer use.

5500 rev limit is the issue, Range Rover chip has lower limiter, etc. Lucky thanks for that but engine builder has one for me for free! I assume setting it up won't be? Err just read your post again, modded ecu, that sounds real nice, if you want to email me with price/ details etc I'd be interested, got to get rid of lucus really hav'nt I.

RR = Range Rover?

...but judging by all the work that's been listed in the OP's profile I doubt it has a standard chip. I imagine a call to Mark Adams is probably in order!

Who did the mapping for TVR ? Thats what i was thinking ,does it have a piggy back chip on it .

Once you own the chip he can flash you a best guess map on to the chip or meet up with him and get it mapped exact to your engine ..Probem is if your thinking of having more mods in the future you will have to pay again.

Mine cost me £25 to have it flashed from a 450 to a 4l. They sometimes come up on fleabay second hand .

Errr the same people who are gonna re map her!!!! Your funny, I'm not sure but I think he's gonna do it for free, and yes I love him?!!????!? Laugh. Probably changed it to stop me thrashing re build, JOKE, don't blame him! I'm slowly getting her sorted, I started out on Bikes so they have to be right.

The fueling may be perfect ,they will just lift the rpm cut off to 6000 to 6500 thats if the chip can be re flashed or burnt what ever they call it ..

Everything will come up on the rollers .

Ok got you. Im not sure if it's got a piggy back or not? I will learn soon! I think I already want more power, jeez! How the fk did you get 340, am I right in thinking yours is a 5.0l Silicone?

You can achieve 340 with your 4.6.

Only the Adams chips are piggy backed (its a scrambler chip so you cant copy it). The TVR ones are just stock Eproms with a TVR map. TVR power can supply just the chip, and at last count it was about £80. The Range Rover map may run lean apart from the rev limiter, so it does need to be the correct map.

Even with a bit of buying & selling (started with a used chip from Daz The Plumber), I still came out the other side of my whole Lucas 14CUX & Mark Adams rolling road tune period £400.00 lighter.

Probably not the best investment I've made on the car TBH, but if I hadn't bought a used chip & sold everything on after I was finished with it the whole episode could have easily cost me £1000 or more!

My conclusion is it would have been better to give Lloyd Specialist Developments that £400 as a down payment on the excellent Canems system I eventually ended up with.

If you think you might want more power in the future you are way way better off making the slightly larger investment in the first place by updating to a fully user configurable engine management system.

This way you not only gain control of the fuelling yourself, but also your ignition advance/retard characteristics which is an essential element you'll never enjoy with a distributor.

I see my Canems as the key to the door of my future modifications, a door that was more or less locked when I ran the 14CUX & distributor.

My advice (if you're keeping the car), is to bite the bullet now and invest a bit more money in such a system, you'll save in the long run for sure!

The biggest issue with chipping / mapping the "airflow" scaling. Now say a stock 4 ltr engine that revs to say 5500 rpm is going to flow less air than say a 4.6 at 6000 rpm. The fuel map only has a finite number of load point settings, so these need to be graduated across the range of airflows that the AFM will read for that particular engine- so in the case of a Range Rover chip, its simply not calibrated for the peak airflow that the TVR motor will use, so the fuelling values will be wrong outside the calibrated airflow for the RR map. On the other side, if you fit say a chip from an engine with a higher airflow, you wont ever reach the part of the map calibrated for the greater airflow, so you loose fuelling resolution as you may only use 3/4 of the map. Beyond that any alterations in the fuelling values will be down to the engines efficiency at various RPM bands, that might need a small amount of tweaking to get the burn correct, but don’t forget the ECU will correct the mixture up to 3400 rpm via lambda feedback as long as the mixture is not too far out. The other issue you have with mapping, is the engine has to be spot on before you get it done-as say if your injectors are clogged when you get the map done, it will then be wrong if you then get them cleaned, so its good money after bad. Before you go down that route you simply need to get a chip from an engine with a similar capacity and RPM limit and give it a try on the rolling road. You can make small tweaks to the overall fuelling (if needed) with a fuel pressure regulator to get maximum power, and leave the remaining fuel control down to the ECU's ability to trim the mixture. If it then drives OK at lower throttle opening, then you don’t really need a remap.

Changing the chip itself is a 15 min job, as long as the ECU has a socket in it for the chip. Early ECU's (up to 1992 approx) have the fuel chip soldered in. Later ECU's have the chip under a plastic cover that needs removing, and then the chip can simply be removed from the socket, and swapped.

BTW- I dont think you will need a remap for the work on your car- just a 4.6 TVR chip- Ill have a dig around- I might have a second hand one.

Well that was a joy to read, right I know what's going on completely at last, re, condition of lump, re built 1500 miles ago, so should take chip nicely, I'm going to go with Doms chip for now but I'm up for a be- spoke system, sounds bloody great literally!!! I've bust the bank to get her working so got to pay some bills, somehow im going to have to wait awhile, aaaarrrrgggh Feck?!? I've always wondered how good the cust service/ future back up the aftermarket ecu companies can offer, how reliable, I'm sure anything race based should be rock solid mind! I'd change it all tomorrow if the credit card would stand it, so, better induction, Disi less electronics/ new ecu, Fuel pressure, S/C, or Turbo and Nos, how much fun can one man have, oh yeah and another crank? anything else I've forgot? Damn speed, once you start??? It's a great buzz these Tvr things, thanks for the tech knowledge, soooo cooool, and perfectly put. Lucky seriously chuffed at your comment. What components would need to be in my engine to achieve that sort of power, I have standard pistons, steel rockers otherwise standard heads, Kent 885 cam! Timing gear oil pump, 10 thou re ground crank, oh and skimmed heads+ block, slightly higher comp! What do you think I could achieve! I need some motivation. Nah just money!

Rather nice, Im working so will have a better look later, stage 4 heads I'm interested in what that means, megasquirt also, I'm lazy and don't read enough. Flywheel that sounds nice also, must spin up the crank real easy.
