Opportunity for basic experience
Discussion
If you'd like the opportunity to become involved in club motorsport, build a race car, build your experience, have fun, smash your knuckles and swear at inanimate lumps of metal then read on. You'll also possibly be able to drive it on trackdays and testing if you get your own insurance or similar.
After years of other financial and time commitments (business, house renovations, driving ban! etc.) I am finally in a position to do some racing.
I have a road going Williams (owned 14yrs) in need of an complete overhaul which I have decided to convert to a car for racing.
If you're looking for experience in any aspect of club series racing and car prep then I am offering it. Its unpaid and I have only a few track days under my belt myself a couple of yeas ago.
I've stripped the car and am collecting the parts I need.
Current plan is to prep the car over the next 6 months, do a couple of trackdays and hopefully take part in one or possibly 2 races towards the end of the year as preparation for a full season next year.
I'm based in Portsmouth, have a double garage with light, power, water and tools and enough budget to overhaul and prep the car, purchase kit/equipment plus trailer etc. I've chosen to go down the build rather than buy route as I know the car fairly intimately (oo er ) and think half the fun(pain) is in building the car and learning as well as driving it. Yes gents, I have sold my soul to the motorsport devil and I'm on the journey.
Chavs and no-it-all's need not apply.
Pitgirls I'll accept.

I'd be interested but I'm based in Lymington, so not immediately local. If I can make it over of an evening/weekend or what have you then I'd be happy to help out.
I was thinking of doing the same in the near future so the experience will certainly help and I know my way around a tool box!

Good on you for offering this, hope you get the type of people you're after applying (I don't mean pit girls!)
If you were either Essex or South Yorks I'd have been interested for sure. I have some similar experience (helping a friend who races) and I know it's going to pay off helping me get a job when I graduate this year.
Good luck and people go for it, once you've been involved with racing you will never get it out of your blood
Oh and which series are you thinking of entering? If you share any days with the Radical SR3 challenge this year then I'll see you there!

The way I figure theres more fun and enjoyment to be had if there are a team of you. For anyone who wants in, its a no lose situ - I've got the car and enough budget, they need to supply enthusiasm/interest, initiative, a hand with the spanners etc. In return they have fun too, gain experience and some trackday driving. Its win/win. We'll see how it turns out.
I need to take small steps so am focusing on the MSV Trackday Trophy atm as suggested by someone in another thread. Classes are based on power to weight so no huge pressure for serious engine mods. Plus there is a follow-on series which can be entered once a season of that is completed. There is also the option of shared drives for the races too but I haven't thought to much about that tho the option is there, could help keep the costs down a bit and team enthusiasm up.
Dates haven't been released yet by the looks of it but I'll check if any match with yours.
Do any self funders out there have experience of getting a team together in this sort of way?

Gotta say Im tempted. Live around 10 miles, (ish), from you and have already built a seven so have an idea. albeit a small one!!
How many hours are you looking for fella?
2 or 3 a week, can be bunched together at weekends etc tho I normally do evenings. I'm averaging around 11 hours a week on it atm, plus research and parts ordering/collection. I've just renewed my membership with Southsea Motor Club so will put the word out there and might inquire at the Engineering dept at Portsmouth Uni.How many hours are you looking for fella?
A friend who raced as sidecar passenger for years lost his ride last year and is doing some trackdays this year in his prelude, so he could possibly be tempted too - I'm yet to put it to him, but petrol runs in his blood, we're old biker mates.
I'm already really enjoying and getting into it, planning to move my work bench from the shed to the garage with vice, power tools etc. Engine/gearbox is yet to come out (looking out for a hoist on ebay), all a bit of an oily mess - needs gaskets, seals and a clean up. Loom, part dash and column are all thats left inside and a bare axle on the back. Oh and I need to change a couple of brake pipes.
New parts I've collected so far include 4discs, 8pads, 4calipers, steering rack, 3ball joints, 4wheel bearings, wipers, plugs, ally rad, partridge and a pear tree.... could go on etc.
Already had stainless exhaust, induction, spare set of wheels, handbrake and clutch cable blah..
Need coilovers, cage, extinguisher, cut-out and a kettle - keep meaning to do that bit (the garage is round the corner not next to the house).
Think it over, and anyone else for that matter. All thats missing is the camaraderie and aforementioned pit girls.
Re-reading it - I'm well happy.
I can see why some produce a build blog to keep track. I'm in Worcester so a bit far for me, but I'd love to come and help out on more local race weekends - I have plenty experience, having built my own track car and have always done my own servicing, as well as a few restores - I'm no stranger to getting my hands dirty.
If I can be of any help when you're at a race local-ish to me (Rockingham, Silverstone, Donnington...that sort of Radius from Worcs) - give me a PM and we can exchange numbers.
Cheers,
Stewart

What sort of use does the Dax get?
Hi
I could be interested in lending a hand. Haven't got loads of experience on the tools but can do basic car/bike maintenance so do know my way round a car in that sense.
Based just north of Southampton so not too far, it would just be a case of helping out when I can I should imagine. Would that work for you???

I've found that getting someone who's close enough to be viable has been practically impossible. I nearly always end up running the car myself at events, which is mostly fine, but scrutineering always happens during the drivers' briefing and getting the body off is a two-man job. That means I end up asking other competitors, passers by or the scrutineer for help getting the body on/off!Jon TVR said:
