Hey, so im currently about to go pickup and buy a new car, having only purchased a couple of cars in my lifetime i don't know if this is normal. The seller says that he only has the 'green part' because he just got the car from his mother, and it's currently in the post, and he would mail it to me certified when it arrives. I understand that this is a probable story and likely true. is it normal to buy a car this way? I have also had a HPI check done, and it seems all good.

advice appreciated.

Providing you can prove ownership, worst case is that you can apply for a new copy. The V5 is not a proof of ownership document.

I would be wondering why he bothered to change the registered keeper if he only just bought it from her. Only takes a week or so normally (though Xmas post has probably slowed it).

Cynic might say it has more owners than stated?
I can't remember if the VRN is on the small slip - have you checked those against the other documents?
How does it check out on a full HPI (not the cheap one, a full one including finance)?

Assume this is a used car from a private seller?

Make sure you get a full receipt for the car and that you pick the car up from their home address an not a public place.

Hi, thanks for your reply, like i said i had a HPI check done, and it shows 5 previous owners, the car is 21 years old so i guess that's not too bad (i've certainly seen younger cars with more). I'm only paying around £500 for this car anyway, so i'm not too worried. the VRN is not on the small slip (I have my older car's V5 in front of me, but at least from the plates/HPI it all matches up to the pictures. He did say something about prior MOTs/services i believe so i'll tale a look at those.

yeah, im actually set to go visit him at his house. i haven't met him yet, but it sounds like a married couple with kids, so i would guess relatively trustworthy (but you never know)

Hey, bumping with slightly off-topic, I've never sold a car before (my old car, being sold tomorrow), and just wanted to clarify something regarding the V5 documents. So is this correct, i can now throw away my old v5c/2 (received directly after the purchase of the vehicle). I tear off section 10 on wards, and give it to the new owner, He also fills in section 6, and send off to the DVLA?

thanks -Lixah

Make sure you get the green suppliment off him. If the V5 doesnt turn up, you will be able to claim a new one, free of charge if you have it. If you don't I think its £25.
