Gents,

A bit of a strange one this but, for the last wee while I've noticed when I'm taking on fluids on a ride I really REALLY struggle with my breathing.

For a about 30 seconds after I take a sip my breathing is all over the place, I lose speed and end up gulping for breath. It's really uncomfortable.

I've always struggled taking on food on a ride but the drinking is a new one.

Can anyone offer a solution or advice? I don't want to turn blue and fall off at the side of the road and end up being eaten by crows and bluebottles.

Might not be of any help but when I was younger I was reasonably good at long distance running. Taking on fluid and maintaining breathing was always something I struggled with until I found a rhythm that would include long breaths and short, multiple sips, meaning my drinking didn't really interrupt my breathing.

Thinking about this it probably won't help you as my breathing was in a rhythm with my footsteps so it was easy to regulate, I don't regulate my breathing at all on my bike therefore rendering the above, most likely, useful!

Do you breath through your nose easily? I have pollips (sp?) and it means I can barely breath through my nose, so all the time I'm drinking or eating I'm not breathing!

Would cows eat a dead person? I thought they just munched on grass? I was chased by cows once, I didn't even think they might bite me. hehe

do you gulp the water down because you are very thirsty? is the water also very cold when you drink it? i had a similar-ish situation arise a couple of times. i found sipping slowly (especially if the water was cold) helped a lot.

try not to die. i heard it can be quite terminal.

I tend to squeeze say half a mouthful at a time and take a breath inbetween. Little and often is better anyway, you should never get to actually feeling thirsty (because then you are probably already dehydrated). Also time when you drink, when your heart rate has fallen. Trying to gulp down when on a 1 in 7 climb is not a good idea, nor when you reach the top, but say half way down the next hill or on the flat as you compose yourself for the next climb.

Does this only happen when you are cycling or do you have any ill-effects from drinking at other times?
Can you swallow the drink OK?
Could you be mildly allergic to your drink or is it just water?

I'm forever choking on my drink when I ride, have to stop and catch my breath properly if I'm going to guarantee free breathing!

It's worse when I MTB with my hydration pack as you're tempted to just continually sip at it!

with a reasonable amount of fitness your heart rate should start to fall pretty quickly when you slacken the effort off a bit, you shouldn't have to stop. If you have a heart rate monitor, if your heart rate stays really high all the time whilst exercising, even if not on a big exertion, it might be worth getting it checked out.

also - try swimming front crawl with your head underwater, coming up every 1 or 2 pairs of strokes (same side each time). That will sort out your breathing and excercise rythms (or drown you). I used to hate it and it made me feel quite panicky, perhaps a bit like you describe) but I persisted and got quite good at it (well, I kept passing people in the pool anyway)

Cows? Cows? I'd imagine cows could be a wee bit bitey! Not sure of the relavence though. ;-)

I can breath through my nose with no problems but it has been cold lately so my nose was slightly blocked with unpleasant green stuff and I suppose this makes the drink cold too. Maybe why I've noticed it more during the last few cold months.

I have also been drinking after a "push" to gain some time and I could be out of breath by this stage. In fact, I will definetly be out of breath by this time.

Looks like a lot of wee things adding up to make it tricky.

drink before the push and let us know how you get on. Harder on routes you haven't been on of course, but on my commute I always take 5-7 swigs before the big climb and never touch the bottle during it

Faced with the same problem, many top riders have struggled to find the best approach to taking on liquids while on the move.

In the end, it turns out the flute is the premier technique.

I already use a champagne flute. Sorry, did I not make that clear.

I am a gentleman cyclist after all.

I havent read the previous posts but, I am asthmatic, and found in the early days after going hard for around 40mins and needing a drink, the brief pause when you hold your breath shocked my body, making me breath harder after i swallowed, I was having to stop, take my inhaler, then carry on, i later read something that suggested regardless of my "thirst" i should drink small amounts every 15 mins this is regardless of NEEDING a drink, this helped alot not just my breathing but my hydration too....two birds.....

hope you find away to over come this

Friend of mine nearly hit a cow in the Alps once, managed to duck under it's head mid berm, quite a thing to behold, Cow didn't go for a bite though, but it might just have not had the time to react.

I might be over simplifying this, or maybe I also suffer from a rare disorder where my epiglottis has only two settings, eating/drinking or breathing and not the 3rd option of drinking & breathing whilst exorcising.

Try drinking little shots of fluid rather than glugging down huge amounts at a time.
