Of all the fantastic cars that Porsche have produced I can't see how they can eclipse this car.. The 991 GT3 will no doubt be far more advanced in almost every way.. But somehow it will of lost some of the 'magic' that they call progression... Porsche nailed it with the 7-GT3-2 / GTS era cars, and I think these cars will be remembered for a long time to come, Sometimes a company peaks so high that its almost impossible to eclipse your previous.

There's a 4 litre owner on here who says his 6 RS is a better car. Agree it's subjective and it depends what you use the car for.

Not many peeps qualified to say and most owners are biased towards their own cars.

I will go ahead and stick my neck out by saying that the best is yet to come.

Porsche have always surpassed their previous cars - eventually, it all depends on your own prespective and how long you are willing to wait.

Absolutely.. The GT3 Mk1/2 / RS are all phenomenal machines.. Some would argue the peak was the 6RS.. Others would argue the air cooled cars were the peak.. Historically cars at the 'crest' of the line.. IE 996.RS 4.0RS/ M3 CSL/ Sagaris, tend to be the most desirable?

Any Gt3 car is fantastic to drive and they all do something better/different than the last one.

The fact that there are probably 20+ models that could be argued are the ultimate road car says all you need to know about Porsche.

I dont think I need to list them!

As a TVR fanatic I really crave to try a GT3, I just want it to be special when I drive it, I hope it feels raw like my Tuscan.. Yet handles like my old Sagaris.. And sounds anywhere near as good as either.. I want it to feel special without all the skill being taken away from me! My budget says MK1 GT3 although I really want 6-2 GT3 / 7 GT3 or 4.0RS biggrin

In the National Geographic video of the 991 development you could see the engineers speaking of the 'Porsche Purist' almost through gritted teeth - they change anything and they are hung out to dry. I wonder why wink

I think I would prefer to wait until the car is actually available before passing any judgement.

If I had my time again I would stick with my 996.2 GT3 - I still love that car, probably more than any other. The 7.2RS was a fantastic car, extremely capable, more flattering to my abilities, maybe the 6.2GT3 is like a first love.

I didn't bond with the GTS at all after a very extended test drive. But there again I didn't bond with my 993C2, apparently Porsche's finest hour so what do I know. smile

Depends how easy you want your 911 to be to drive!
All subjective..........

Oh and if your 911 doesn't have more than 500 bhp you're a poof wink

The GTS isn't a GT car in anything but name is it?

What does it share with GTn variants?

Tough question. The market changes conctantly and new buyers and drivers have evolving needs,so that my personal take on the finest Porsche might well be out of synch with someone 20 years younger.
The cars evolve also and the debate will rage on.
I have not driven the 4.0 and so am not qualified to speak to it specifically.
However, I do have a 3.6 and 3.8 RS and long ago decided to keep them permanently as examples of cars that had a very personal appeal..Mezger engine, six speed, reasonably simple interior. They will be well eclipsed in the future in terms of performance, but for me personally represent a moment of delight, cars that are beyond my talents as a driver in many ways, but that provide me with a simple, feedback laden experience that feels close to the long history of the 911.
Best ever?...no idea, but certainly a high point in time for me.

Would have to agree with he above, especially as the new cars are Volkswagen AG!

If you are judging the car purely as a driving tool then I think the 996GT3 and the 993 GT2 although not a lot can match the experience of the air cooled clubsport models. For me, if the 997GT3 had passive suspension then yes, it would probably be the 4.0

There were more tactile and enjoyable 911s before the 4.0.

There will be more enjoyable 911s after the 4.0.

Is the 996 GT3 uprated bushes and a decent set of coilovers?
