Gusteau's is apparently very good. However it may have closed down as Chef Gusteau past away.

Anton Ego the famous critic gave it a slating but I think a new Chef called Remy may have reopened it.

Worth finding out more if you can.

Hope this helps

For less expensive place, I like Robert et Louise (haven't been for a few years but lovely steaks they chuck on an open fire in the restaurant), and L'Avenue just down the road from the Plaza Athenee. Not super cheap but good for people watching if you sit downstairs. Also try the very cheap and cheerful L'As du Fallafel in the Marais for the best kebab you'll ever eat!

Didn't it get closed down by the health inspector and then Anton Ego lost his job beacause he recommended it to everyone?

Willi's Wine Bar is owned by a couple of Brits and is well worth a visit. They have a website and you can book online.

I found eating out in Paris daunting

Here is my two pence:
To eat:
Chez Gladines. Metro stop: Place d'Italie. It is amazing basque food at ridiculously low prices. Order the Salad Complete - its the best decision you'll ever make (good to share). Cassoulet and Magret de Canard are tip top. Great wine at max 15€ a bottle and main courses about 10€. It's a popular joint so you may need to wait as you can't book. But just go in and have a drink at the bar and if you're a two then you won't be waiting very long. Only takes cash. Address: 30 Rue des 5 Diamants, Paris.

Chartier. Metro stop: Grands Boulevards. Again another cheaper option, very simple but really tasty. Used to be a factory worker's cafeteria and now does like 700 covers a night or something, and the walls are covered in little numbered drawers where the workers could keep their own napkins. 'serviettes' ha. It's big and the food is good basic French food. The sort of place Cafe Rouge tries to emulate. Only takes cash. It is about 50 yards from the metro station and there will be a queue there at weekends but a 30person queue normally goes in like 15 minutes because the place is so big.

L'Entrecote Relais de Venise. Metro Stop: Porte Maillot. Better than chartier but not as central. World famous Steak Frites place. Everyone gets steak and chips but you get to choose how you want it. They serve it with their 'special sauce' and hold back 1 third of the steak to cook fresh when you have finished the first 2 thirds and serve with hot fresh chips. Probs queues again as no bookings. Delicious French Desserts. Since opening in Paris, there are now a few across the world like in London and New York.

Le Stella. Can't remember the metro stop but the address is 133 Avenue Victor Hugo, Paris. It's a more expensive, more upmarket place to go, usually very popular with the French. Great Seafood and some adventurous French food. - quite expensive!

And another vote for Falafel at the Marais. This is a must. Metro stop Saint Paul. Rue des Rosiers. L'As du Falafel is the best and there is a shop opposite also really good. They are hand held pittas filled with fresh salads and Harissa and freshly fried falafel. €5.50 to take away but it's also nice to sit in and have with a few beers. If you get two, get a meat one and a falafel one. Great for lunch. Also the Marais is a really nice place to walk around for a few hours and is full of cool shops and cafes and loads of vintage shops too. Also the crepe stall at the end of that street on the same side as L'As du Falafel is unreal. Probably the best I've tasted in Paris.

To drink:

Le Ballroom. 'the experimental cocktail club'. Metro stop: Chatelet le Halles. It's a black door next to a place called Le Beef Club (also a great place to eat), there is no signage so just go through the door and down the spiral staircase and it opens out onto the most glorious cocktail bar. Buzzing at weekends with young chic Parisians. Roughly 13euros a cocktail but def worth it.

There is another bar owned by the same company also very lovely with a different menu at
37 Rue Saint-Sauveur, Paris.

Pubwise, there are a load to choose from at Chatelet, Hideout is a good one, 2.50€ pints till 9ish each night and all night on a Thursday. This is a good place for a cheap beer after Paris has finished arse raping your wallet.

Also have a wander around St Germain de Près as there are loads of nice places to sit and drink, and a nice fountain in the middle of the area to sit and have a takeaway coffee or something.

Market wise: Dupleix is nice on a Wednesday and a Sunday and the Nanterre Sunday Market is great. Although, it's a big of a trek from central Paris.

Sight seeing wise: it's free for EU citizens under 25 to climb the Arc de Triomphe and take the stairs up the Eiffel Tower.

Walking around the gardens of Luxembourg and the gardens if Tuileries (next to the Louvre) are also nice cheap ways to entertain yourself. Also the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay are free for EU citizens under 25.

I also must highly recommend the war museum and napoleons tomb at the hotel des invalides. €9.50 / person and just a huge huge place.

Hope that helps

A few that stand out from the last time my wife and I went are:

Le Coq (Trocadero)- reasonably priced, nice food, really friendly staff

Le Fouquet's (Champs-Elysées) - a must for fans of the Bond novels. Bit pricey and the staff are incredibly up their arse, gets fooking busy too, but the food is lovely. When you order steak and bearnaise sauce of here you get a stty little pot of the stuff, in Fouquet's they bring a massive bowl full, lovely.

Pub Kleber (Avenue Kleber) - Very friendly place. Food is quite simple but not overly priced.

Le Kleber (corner of Rue Boissiere / Av. Kleber) - Small friendly place. Lovely omelets.

ETA - Also we did the Seine river cruise with lunch. Upgrade to the top level and you get loads of booze. was pissed as a fart after that.

A la Biche au Bois, 45 Avenue Ledru-Rollin (near Gare de Lyon) is very good. Cramped, very french, and you won't get in without booking but it's not silly money and is excellent food.

I also did want to go to La Boucherie Rouliere, 24 Rue des Canettes, which looks really good and gets good reviews, but we were utterly stuffed by the point in the weekend where we planned to go so I cancelled. Probably swerve that if you or the GF are veggie though!

Phebe
190 Rue de Courcelles, 75017 Paris, France
+33 1 46 22 33 23 ý

Little known, except by the locals who favour it. Former cafe in which members of the resistance met secretly in the kitchen at the back, whilst Gestapo and SS generals ate in the front (in 'Allo, 'Allo styly, but factual). It is tiny but with a tremendous, vibrant atmosphere. Very friendly owner operators (together with Phebe, the Yorkie terrier from which the restaurant took its name). Superbly cooked traditional french fayre. Quick service without the typical Parisienne surliness. Unpretentious, relaxing and a great place to study the real Parisienne locals. Very reasonably priced too.

Take a look at this place

http://legrandcolbert.fr/

YOu are spoilt for choice with some of teh recommendations above but this is a mid level Brasserie with one of the best chicken dishes we have ever had - Poulet Bresse! Stunning and reasonably priced.

Brilliant atmosphere at all times of day. MUST book if you fancy it.

We have been for a meal for two at lunctimes, lovely eve meals. Dinner with friends and rugby lunches. Nobody we have gone with has ever complained; especially as it 'starred' in a well known film!!!

Take a look and be patient with the web site as not teh most user friendly. Nice and easy to get to as well.

Whatever you do - plan and enjoy! We took some friends 'around' Paris in a day and it was like a Python movie - great fun and did loads. And they loved Grand Colbert as well smile

Yeah, I've eaten there too - quite a treat but it's slightly more biased towards the style than the substance. And not the cheapest, if that's a consideration!

Service was immensely good - memorable, in fact - when I went there last year.

Yes - as at the top, it's within Gare de Lyon (and was, I believe, originally the station buffet?)
