I'm building my new machine and am having issues with my new Maxtor 300GB HDD.

Initially I was about to set partitions on it, but the XP Pro setup only detected 130GB, so I called a friend who suggested I check the BIOS was set correctly. I exited setup, rebooted and checked the BIOS without changing anything. It had correctly auto-detected the HDD. I went ahead and installed XP, but need to find the remaining 170 GB - any ideas??

TIA

Julian

Your problem is lack of support for 48-bit LBA. Whether that is a motherboard/BIOS problem or an XP problem I don't know, but if it's a new motherboard I'd be surprised if it was that.

You could download Knoppix www.knoppix.org/ and burn that to a CD and boot your new machine off the Knoppix CD. If that finds all 300GB it's probably an XP problem, if it's still 130-odd suspect the MB.

If you are able to, format the disk on another XP PC.
