Sardinia, advice please when & where to go how to get there

Decided to try somewhere different again this year, anyone on here been to Sardinia, can you recommend Hotels, ideally very near a good beach, what to see and do, just the two of us going. Have loved South of France, Crete and Italy, how does Sardinia compare? Not looking for nightlife, more the culture and the real place, for a week. Is it best to take a package and fly direct or via Nice and take a ferry, for the experience.
Flexible on when to suit the best time.
