Been looking at the following 3 cars for my wife.

Mx5
Mr2
Yaris T Sport

The criteria being cheap to run and fairly economical and an all year round proposition.

Have I missed any obvious choices?

What will I be looking out of the window at on monday? I wonder.......

MR2 is a good call, but has next to no luggage space (just a couple of cubbies behind seats! Really, if you need any kind of luggage carrying capacity it's not ideal! . As a second car it may be okay, but as a main car it would be pretty grating I would imagine! My mate has one and he normally has his girlfriend holding suitcases/bags/camping equipment in the passenger seat!!..

..MX5 much more daily useable and the answer to everything on here. Good build and cheapish parts, easy to work on and very good to drive. A lot of cars out there, easy to find a good one. A great car for a girl, and one you can enjoy the occasional blast in too

Clio 172. Hatch, fun, good mpg for what it is, mid 30's, boot, solid roof. I think as a FWD car, its the best there is for size etc, just more poke than the Yaris.

I purchased for my mum the MX5 for the same purchase, she struggles to get a shop in there, it ends up on the front seat, I had to spend more on a hardtop, and its a nightmare parking next to kerbs (according to her) to get out with older (50+) age

Thanks for the replies so far, dont fancy the clio 172 driving position is pants if I remember the last time I sat in one and at 2k I imagine I would be shelling out on bits and bobs.

What are the MX5's like for sills and rusting on the arches?

Thought it was for your Wife? wink Unless she's 6ft she won't have a problem.

I'm 6ft and removed the spacers under the seats and the position is now great btw.
