Cholesterol test at 33
Discussion
Hi
I'm 33 years old soon to be 34 and have a family history of heart disease. My father had a heart attack at the age of 54 subsequently resulting in him having a triple bypass. His brother died at the age of 38 of a heart attack and his father suffered from heart disease in his early 60`s until his death of a heart attack at 73. My question is can I ask for a cholesterol test from my GP and would they be willing to do it bearing in mind the above. I do worry quite a lot that I might of inherited Familial hypercholesterolemia and was wandering if a cholesterol test would be useful in ruling that out. I don't smoke, drink responsibly, eat a balanced diet and regularly exercise. I score perfect on my BMI.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Deffo get a test done, I am in much the same position. I am not generally a member of the "worried well" brigade, but I (i) keep an eye on cholesterol (ii) try to exercise properly regularly (iii) have my blood pressure checked regularly and (iv) try to watch what I eat in terms of fat/try to keep the weight off. I saw a cardiologist a bit ago, he sent me for an MRI and I have some cool pics of my (as yet perfectly healthy) heart.
My plan is to live as healthy as I can for as long as I can, bearing in mind (i) we know/practice so much more about healthy living now than even a generation ago and (ii) you've got to die of something and at least I know my enemy. There's no reason why I can't live healthily into my 70s.

Heart disease runs in my family: a triple bypass for my Dad 10 years ago followed by a heart attack last year and his father passed away after a heart attack in his 60s.
Due to this my family wanted me to have a Cholesterol test and once I had explained why there was no problem - I'm 22. Turns out everything is fine although I have been advised to have annual checks just to make sure.

Most men are reticent when to comes to discussing health issues however GPs will be happy to deal with any worries and we men should be more willing to consult them about any concerns we might have. I went to my GP in November because I was having to pee frequently. Subsequent tests and a bisopsy revealed early prostate cancer.
Contact your GP whenever you've a health problem, you know it makes sense.

I did one at LLoyds pharmacy, think I had to pay about £25. When the numbers weren't quite right (ratio of HDL/LDL was out of range) I got referred to my GP. First thing he did was order his own set of tests anyway, so might as well go straight to your GP.
Unless you are a scrounger this is what you pay your NI for. Don't think you are wasting their time. I am sure the GP would much rather you go in for a check up than present yourself to A&E with a heart attack because something wasn't caught.
