Is the E46 the new Barry car of choice?
Discussion
All things will pass.
I remember a time when E30's were the unloved, Barry-ed small RWD cars of choice. Now the few well preserved examples are increasingly sought after, and not just the M3 any more.
Keep it free of the Barry-er's Witchcraft, and E46's will increase in desirability again. By that time, the Barrys will then move onto what's now the current shape 1 and 3 series.
I couldn't justify car-as-investment in my current position but if I were looking to do so, I'd consider buying an unmodified low mileage E46 M3 with a manual gearbox in a sensible colour in another 2-3 years, garaging and taking very good care of it (but still enjoy it sparingly!) and not sell it for another 10-15 years. I don't think they'll be as sought after as E30 M3's are now, but I bet they won't be far off.
If you were really devious and mean spirited, you could encourage Barrys to buy other M3's so they ruin them with silly mods and/or crash them and/or ruin the mechanicals through neglect... then your unmolested one would be even rarer when you roll it out in another 15 years. While I might think of these things, I wouldn't act on it because I don't have the time or space to devote to a garage queen for a long time and I feel a little sad about the idea of cars as investments rather than things to enjoy. I bet some people out there with the resources, time and space are squirrelling away E46 M3's though.

Yeah theyve been council estae bling for a long while. was going to look at one around six months ago with the potential to buy for a customer who had been after a nice one for a while. The directions given on the phone were 'turn left at the burnt out police car and right at the next barricade, cars sitting outside the derelict lock ups'.....

Indeed I agree with all of the above. The E36 is now as cheap as its going to get for unmolested examples. But there is so much messed about with tat out there that needs to just die! I have just bought a 1999 328 Edition Convertible to add to my stable, didn't really need another car but it was sensationally clean and only 56k miles, top spec, as it left the factory, hardtop and not a blemish on it. I paid steep at £3k, but intend to cherish it and hopefully it may even make a few quid in the not too distant futureI remember a time when E30's were the unloved, Barry-ed small RWD cars of choice. As e46s have got cheap, I've noticed more and more with stupid wheels led angle eyes and other various tack. Is it taking over from the mk4 golf? Of are these Barry boys just wanting to get in on some RWD action YO!
It's lost what limited appeal it had to me.
So what is the problem with the 'lower class' enjoying good cars? Are they not allowed healthy grub either? It's lost what limited appeal it had to me.

Give 'em good grub and they would only smother it with ketchup!
Exactly, they can have a good car if they want, but they seem intent on ruining them. I've seen a lot of early E39s used as chav chariots as well. Shame really. The worst was the one I followed into Tesco once, who parked diagonally across a disabled space, then 4 able bodied hoodied boys got out. billzeebub said:
