Next year my uni is changing location, from Schoolhill down to Garthdee, and this presents me with a choice, move in to a flat with the girlfriend (first time living together) and keep the Micra, or bargain barge for 1-2 hours in the morning for uni. I'm in the fantastic situation of having my parents willing to help out with rent, or if i stay at home help with car insurance. This means that financially, either option should see me on identical footing, near enough.

The reason i ask is that i should be going going into my honors year, the workload will likely be massive, and currently living at home brings more stresses than it alleviates, and i really don't want an extra hour of pushing my way through traffic unless it's in a serene bubble of comfort and metal.

The other option is too move out again and get(rent) a flat nearer uni with my partner of the last 3 years, the two of us are very keen on the idea, and keep the Micra , which i'm not so keen on. I did love living away from home, but moved back due to quitting my part time job after they refused to allow me to work less than 20 hours per week (12 hour max contract) during my exams

thoughts?

ETA: i should probably have thrown this in the lounge...

If living at home is stressful, you seriously don't want to commute an hour or more every morning.

If you're at the right stage in your relationship to think about moving in with her anyway, that's what I'd do. An extra hour in bed, with your girlfriend, every morning? No brainer wink

She's a bit of a demon in the morning, fantastic in the kitchen and other important areas though. She doesn't even mind that my two favorite hobbies are attempting to climb anything dangerous, and fiddling with cars. I do really fancy a change of car though, i'm still doing sums to see if i can afford a new more comfy/fun way to destroy my bank account, and move out

I moved to Canada with my girlfriend a few months ago, at the ripe old age of twenty.
It's a shock, that's for sure. However I'm quite content, so I would suggest that's what you do.

Just make sure you have room to do your work.

so much for independence, maybe your parents could come round and wipe your ass for you aswell

No brainer.
Move out of parents in with girlfriend. Trust me you do jot want the extra stress of a long commute in your final year.
You could still change cars if you want.

Call me wierd, but I quite like time in my car alone. Give me time to relax and chill out and think about stuff.
If you've got alot of stress coming might be worth thinking about!

Snap, however it's difficult to ponder the mysteries of the universe, in a small Japanese hatch that rattles like buggery smile
I suppose there is the option of buying a cheap 'wafter' like a citroen c5 for next to nothing, and still move into town. It could be good to escape any arguments smile Cheers

Good point, well made. Thankfully i'm studying Engineering, and not the mechanics of the English language. An ellipsis has 3 dots not 7...

On the other hand...

There is always a risk that moving in with a partner makes the relationship turn sour and you end up falling out. Possibly the worst time that this could happen is during your final year of uni. It'd be a distraction and hassle when you really don't need it. Only you know how big this risk is, and if it's one worth taking?

Another alternative may be to find your own accommodation somewhere close to where your girlfriend is living. That way you can still spend lots of time together and you still have your own space if you fall out.

Keep the Micra, they're not that bad to drive - especially compared to a 2 hour morning commute, in any car!

And if you're 20/21, do you really want to be living with parents full time?

How do you think it can take 1-2 hours to get from Schoolhill (RGIT?) to Garthdee?

I'm no athlete but could WALK it in less time than that.

I don't live on Schoolhill, i live about 17 miles outside away from the AECC so Garthdee is about 23 miles away. At rush hour it can take a long time for me to head up king street, and longer if i want to head to Garthdee, as i'd have to go along the parkway, an across the Haudigan(sp?)roundabout. This last week I've had exams in Garthdee and on 2 occasions it has taken me 1 hour 45 to get to from my house to RGU sport. If i'm not driving at peak times it still takes around an hour to get from my house to Garthdee. And i do that every Monday, Wednesday and Friday as is. It can and often does take me an extra hour in traffic. Sorry if that sounded rather grumpy, exams aren't fun smile
