Budget / Car Spec - Upwards Drift

So I have many cars but none are really suitable as a simple, economical family / winter / motorway hack.

So I was looking for something like a Mazda6 - my wife has one and it's a great family car that for some reason is worth peanuts.

I can't have a lesser engine than her so a 2.3 Sport was what I was looking for - available from £1200.

But it would be nice to have 4WD to avoid spinning the wheels pulling out of wet junctions.

So I look at Audi Quattros but the non turbos are too slow and a nice Avant is £3k and for £4k I could have a 2.7 S4 but for £6k I could have a V8 S4 - I spend an entire evening looking at V8 S4s before remembering I was supposed to be buying a simple, economical family / winter hack !

(Last time I started looking I ended up buying a Chimera)

Please tell me it isn't just me who does this.

All of my cars CAN do it but I can afford ANOTHER one - I think you'd be better off on Mumsnet or the Daily Mail forum.

Oh they are goods cars and I've thought about it but really I wanted a cheap hack that I'm not worried about leaving anywhere.

Plus IIRC they are only available with a boot and I tend to move lots of car / house stuff around so want a hatch / estate.
