I keep having desires to change cars despite the fact mine is reliable, relatively economical (well, ish) and does its job very well, I've owned it for around 15 months and it's been absolutely superb.

It's not worth much right now as MOT expires mid march, it's due an oil service in around 3k miles and also needs new rear tyres in the same period. So... If I get an mot, service and new tyres I've spent at least £4-500 if nothing else needs doing so again, probably not worth changing but I keep wanting to change.

Then the question is what to change with, something more sensible to save money quicker (saving for a house deposit), get a newer barge, get something more fun (2 seater coupe) or something in between like a 3 series or something.

Why, oh why do I love cars? It's expensive and plays on my mind far too much!

Decisions!

What would you do?

E38 728i (see my profile)

Honestly its been so bloody good but still, why would I want to change? I'm always weary of getting something unreliable or needs loads spending on it etc

Save for the house, more space for the smokers... my logic for this year anyhow. Damn, it's tough when all you want to do is chop for something else, even when what you've got does the job fine.

Oops thoroughly failed to look at the user name.

Keep the E38 - the difficult thing is finding a good one - and get an entirely different car.

I genuinely think that even with the service it's unlikely you'll ever save any money no matter what you change to (your current car is known to you).

You do the same as the rest of us. Look at classifieds, get a dream, search out a decent one.
Then stealthly sell your car and replace it before she finds out. No rush though, the chase is the best part....

When you're passionate about cars, then risks have to be taken and mistakes will be made. The sensible option is for things where emotions are not involved.

There are more cars I want to experience and own than I'll ever have time for.

It's an obsession. No matter what car I have I'm always looking for the next thing. The other half says as long as these urges for change are for cars she's not too bothered.

15 months is a lifetime. I am on car number 48, and I have been driving 19 years.

Some impressive history here.

Go on then, divide the number of cars you've owned by the number if years you've held a licence.

I'm 2.53

I'm a 1.75, we're mostly all the same, that's what makes us petrolheads I think, once you've learnt all about the car there's nothing more new, it's a bit like a girlfriend, the initial chase is exciting and the first few months are magical, then it gets a bit boring and stale.

Disclaimer: I love my wife dearly and wouldn't swap her for any other woman, but she knows if a Lamborghini came along she'd be dumped

Exactly. I don't know how anyone can keep the same car for years. No matter how good it may be. Life's too short!

Until buying my ML55 I had been through about 20 cars in 3 years - still have 9 of them but don't tell the wife, she only knows about 5.

I tend to postpone car swaps by modifying the one I have. I spend loads of money and then sell the car for a fraction of what I have spent on it. It's a rubbish tactic and I highly recommend it.

I've had 42 cars in 21 years of driving but did have 2 cars that I kept for almost 5 years each plus I've had my M3 11 years.
