Well 18 months and 3rd fan belt broken. That's OPC, sports car independent and Porsxhe Indi all tried and failed. In total every 300 miles they fail. Nice car though.!! smile

Have they checked the pulley for nicks, these can easily eat into fan belts!..

My understanding is that this is caused by a worn alternator bearing which seizes during operation causing the belt to over heat from friction and snap.

Worth checking out.

They have a hub with bearing in, spins separate from fan. Could be that failing.

I am going to mention all these points to the Indie when i get the car there. It has had a new pully, all new belts but the altenature is an interesting thought. I had to change the battery the other day and wonder if the alternator is not working properly. Hope i can get it fixed!!

There's a fault somewhere that's causing the belts to break - fix that and things should be fine. Use genuine Porsche belts and make sure the pulley update has been done (that said if the pulley has recently been replaced the old superseded pulley should no longer have been available from Porsche). A bearing issue is definitely something to look for. The dual belt system can be perfectly reliable.

That Clewett Engineering solution does look good except for the lack of drive to the AC compressor.

There's a Clewett kit (more modern ribbed belt) that also drives the ac. I'm having this fitted to my 993 turbo at the moment.

Hi Steve. Where do you get this from and who is fitting it for you. Have you suffered the same problems I gave and is this why your fitting this gear?

I suffered this, its a common problem but last time it happened I made sure my indie took the time to make sure the new belts were adjusted perfectly and it hasn't reoccurred smile

i fitted a 6pk belt/pulleys on my old gt2 racer. the alternator pulley had a clutch in as a guy i raced with had a few belts come off when changing down quickly loosing him a race they had sewn up! new porsche v-belts are good, but i dont think you can beat the multi-rib belt conversion!

Hi falconwood
I haven't suffered the issue as frequently as you, but yes I've thrown a few belts. As everyone says the latest pulleys and careful set-up and tensioning can solve many of the issues, but the standard v-belts are a pretty old solution and the multi-rib clewett should (I hope) deal with the issue once and for all. I got the kit directly from Clewett in the states (they're pretty helpful if you mail them).

You will actually try the kit before me, I ended up doing a comprehensive overhaul of the car and so haven't got the engine back in yet. Looking forward to your experiences.

I have had the Serpentine system fitted to the car now and so far all is well. It may well be in my head but the car seems better for it. The car sounds better and I feel a lot more confident that the belt will not break. It is a much wider belt than the normal one. So far about 500 miles and fingers crossed - problem sorted!!
