Do these get have intermittent failures, signifying they are on their way out... or do they just stop working full stop ?
I would imagine they could get lazy with age/wear and intermittent failure could occur from the fact they have fine wire windings internally like a speaker or electronic distributor
the small gauge copper wire can age and get fragile/break with the constant heat cycles however I have not seen total failure of a stepper/IAC on the RV8 yet
I suppose they could do either.
When mine started playing up it would rev high for quite some time on a hot start up. The usual take it out and clean it and drown it in wd40 would work for a couple of weeks and then back to the high revs on hot start. It was ok everywhere else just on the initial hot start. They can become sticky and it obviously couldnt move close down the air supply as quickly as it should.
I gambled and bought a cheap £16 one of ebay and problem sorted. Well so far so good. Just be careful you get the right one. There is a small plastic locating pin in the wiring plug, have a look you will easily see it, they come in different orientations even when the same part number is offered.

Is your speedo working ok.
You could try running with the stepper disconnected and see if it still stalls. This would show whether its the stepper or not. If it still occurs the road speed signal to the ecu could be at fault. I know you are running a t5 box rather than the rover. Maybe worth checking the road speed sensor wires, where ever they are on your conversion.

When my required attention I disconnected it and the car ran fine, only thing it was a bit lumpy when cold but after that no problem, in actual fact I quite liked the fact that the revs dropped to idle immediately I stopped rather than slowly dropping. Replaced it eventually though.
