Another 6GT3 search..
Discussion
Morning all,
I have just sold my 40th Anniversary 996 to a friend of a friend and am moving up a gear in my search for my next car.
A little background: I enjoy karting and often get down to Buckmore for some endurance and sprint racing with friends and work colleagues. This meant the inevitable interest in track days and so I have done a couple at Snetterton 300 and Brands Hatch GP.
The last Brands Hatch GP day was with a friend who testing he newly setup 964 RS replica. A few laps as his passenger and I had confirmed my belief that I was asking my 996 to do something it was not designed to do. As well setup as it could be, it is not a vehicle designed for constant high RPM work on a track. (even though the x51 engine is only 7k miles old, courtesy of OPC warranty). His 964 was incredible on cup tires and full track setup suspension.
I hope you are still reading this..
So I considered a 964 replica myself, but after searches and conversations I have satisfied myself that I have missed the boat and a decent setup is going to cost £30k to £35k. The newer and more powerful GT3 is therefore my target.
I admire both mk1 and mk2 and so will consider both versions. I am only interested in CS versions as my use is track tuition and track day fun. My budget runs out of steam at £40k as I don't want to use any finance.
I liked the Guard Red CS mk2 at RPM, but missed the boat there. The Nick Whale car is confusing me, and I am not much clearer having spoken to the dealer yesterday. Private sales at this price make me a little nervous given the example I am after have presumably been worked fairly hard. I am not sure about the heavily modified GT3's though I am comfortable with a K410 conversion. A complete engine replacement to a 3.8 unit seems difficult to assess. I also find it hard to believe that a CS with upgraded suspension and braking has never seen a track..
I hope that I have retained everyones attention and ask that you may offer some critique or perhaps engineer an introduction.
Many thanks
Gregory

The Nick Whale car is very nice in the metal its a comfort model
had a new clutch and single mass fly at 7k
and has leather buckets and has a service history
I didnt go for it for the simple fact its not a cs and its silver and the fact its been for sale for well over a year and the price is still 36k i also found the brakes grinded and were well not great possibly due to the car being idle for so long.
I am going to wait until suck time a nice cs with low miles and a desirable colour comes onto the market goo luck with the search your in a good position not having a px or finance so should grab a good one

The wife would find the Polar car amusing at it doesnt look to dissimilar to the old car.
I am due to speak on Monday with the dealer with regards to the service history and DME recordings. I like the look of it but am considering consumables costs on the horizon, major service and cost of bolting in a cage and harnesses. Still not a CS. The confusion came with regards to the cars route to the dealer, as I believe it was a dealer transfer from a part ex.

Let me get this right: you're looking for a CS to do trackwork with but are gun-shy if it shows any signs of having track-focused upgrades?
If so, that's very broken thinking IMHO. You will be doing those self-same upgrades yourself in due course, probably sooner rather than later unless you are very fortunate in finding a car with a recent brake & suspension refresh. A car that has been tracked is far more likely to have had money spent (often in prodigious quantities) and been over-serviced too.
You might want to contact red997 on here who has a very nice 996.1 CS in Guards Red for sale with 6-pot brakes & fresh suspension. It has been tracked a bit, but as he also has a Cup car, not that much

Just to clarify if I gave a confusing comment earlier with regards to upgrades.
Suspension, brakes, fly wheels etc are as you point out likely upgrades.
My comments were really aimed at complete engine replacements to 3.8L etc. I just don't know enough about the mechanics to get my head comfortable with it.
If I can find a car that has refreshed clutch, LSD plates, mounts, bushes, suspension and brakes then I will be a happy chap!
A GR mk1 CS sounds very appropriate..

Evening Ade!
Nah don't worry, it was a moment of madness after a fruitless meeting with a financially type man on friday afternoon.
Would enable us to move house but sod it, my lass agrees it's better to just wait.
How's the engine coming along?
ETA - MK1 Clubbie is vveerrryyy appropriate OP!

The nick whale car failed to sell at auction in September, it was bid to £25k iirc
I did speak to an agent & the vendor would have accepted £29k
I did speak to an agent & the vendor would have accepted £29k

After paying auction house fees, it would've been 32.5.
GT3 Nick Whales is a SOR.

The real point I was trying to make is that if you can find a good car with some or even all of your list already done, you won't be paying much, if any, premium; it costs a fortune to do the work so it makes sense to be looking at tracked cars because they are the ones that are most likely to have had that list already done. As long as it is straight & the invoices are present and stack up, go for one of them.Suspension, brakes, fly wheels etc are as you point out likely upgrades.

I don't know of any 996 that has had the 997.2 3.8 GT3 engine transplanted. It's more usual to just replace the barrels & pistons to make a 3.8, 3.9 or even a 4.0
It's fairly straightforward & the technology is available from a number of suppliers.

I presume that it is the cage that you are mainly after for that purpose, which is fair enough, but if not then the other differences are fairly miniscule? The buckets are great but a lot of comforts already have those in them.If you are buying one to mainly use it on track then I agree with the above that it shouldn't make much odds if its previous life has already been spent that way and if relevant modifications have been made then that should be a bonus as it would save you having to invest in them yourself (they rarely seem to add as much in the retail value of the car for sale as it would cost you to add).
