Headed down the M74/M6 yesterday, and back today.

On the M74, on the last bridge at Gretna before the remaining dual carriageway, there was a gantry with about 12 cameras on it, in two banks. Never seen anything like this before, but today on the M6 just north of Penrith there was the same configuration.

Didn't look like any speed cameras I've seen - I'm assuming they are ANPR or suchlike.

Anyone any more info?

(Off to have a look on the web...)

Well I hope you're right about them being ANPR, in which case that's OK with me. Just so long as they're nothing to do with speed checking.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

ANPR for vehicles coming into "England" via Stranraer. Doesn't mean they won't have the capability in future to be part of a SPECS system...

Thanks, Dibble.

But 4 cameras per lane? Seems a bit OTT.

I think it was installed in the early 90s so its probably a prototype/ first generation. Made by the same people that produce those green Traffic Master thingumys.

I always understood it to be an ANPR type system as Dibble says. Location because it's "on" the route south from the Stranraer ferry, think extension of London "Ring of Steel."

Of course it assumes that the bad guys don't have the wit to find a diversion.

Hate to say this Neil, but they've been there for yonks. Maybe your brain has just got better at camera pattern recognition.

Probably just that I use the A1 all the time now... haven't headed down the west side for a while.
