I test drove a 944S (2.5 16v) yesterday that seemed very good other than some noise from the rear diff or bearings under acceleration and deceleration. Not particularly loud or instrusive but could be annoying. I'm keen to know asap whether this might be a serious problem or just an annoyance. Any thoughts please?

There was also some noise from the steering but I'm told that will be sorted.

a lot of 944s have gearbox whine from the rear - sounds like a high pitched buzzsaw or an angle grinder, most common in gears 1-3 for obvious reasons. doesnt necessarily mean much unless getting progressively more intrusive, which is hard to judge when you are doing a one-off test drive. If you really like the car and would consider an offer otherwise, get an inspection. Ultimately a gearbox rebuild isnt the worst thing that can happen in a 944, the box isnt too hard ot get at and its a common enough job for competent independents

I would have guessed it's even more of a hassle than having a 944 engine rebuilt. Maybe not in the UK, though.

Thanks. I seem to get different opinions whoever I ask but general view seems to be that some gearbox noise is common and should be ok. Getting a full inspection is proving difficult but I should be able to a second opinion from a garage at least.

Drive several DeepPurple, not just this one. there are lotsout there and you won't know if thisis a gem or a dof until you try a few.

The first time I drove a 'noisy' gearboxed 944 you could tell instantly that something was not right

I've driven 4 so far and this felt the best in terms of handling. I certainly couldn't feel any problems with the gear change.

An independant garage is going to check it on Friday and give me an opinion but I'm still wondering whether a full inspection would be worthwhile. Report from the garage that last serviced it was that it was very well looked after.

hi mate, i have a 944s, it has a slight wine from the rear of the car, Im not to concerned about this as a friend of mine had one and which was 3 years old when he bought it a few years ago and that had a slight wine from the rear. My personel opinion is dont worry about it, if its a straight car apart from the slight wine, buy it.
