Been down to a friends garage this morning to get a job done on my sisters car. While I was there a woman came in in a Mitsubishi Shogun asking if her car would still slide on ice even though it's a 4x4 because she needed to go and check on her horses. This may be general stupidity among 4x4 drivers, which although ridiculous is far from uncommon. What shocked me most of all, is that this woman is..... a driving instructor!!! And is also responsible for training other instructors!

How on gods earth on people like this allowed to become driving instructors? It answers a lot of questions about the standard of driving among a seemingly large amount of the population.

You don't tend to see them quite so often these days, but remember a few years back when 'Become a driving instructor / be your own boss' adverts were all over the telly?

Bit like ' Just finished uni with a half arsed degree?!.. no job prospects? - Become a teacher then! any fker will do'

The current burst of poor weather will lead to a lot of "entertainment" round my way..........as it does every time it snows biggrin

There are quite a few folks from outside of the UK (politically correct term I believe biggrin ) who own a whole range of 4*4's in my neck of the woods. However, they have a common practise of putting on ridiculously large wheels (some even have spinners eek ) and then fitting tyres that appear to be a thinner version of a rubber band.

The upshot is various comic turns involving a lot of sliding, tank slappers and facing the wrong way with frequent impacts with fences, lamp posts and other static objects. Fortunately I have not yet seen a parked car hit but that is almost certainly down to luck as opposed to driving skill eek

I can only assume that the owners of these 4*4's believe that they are going to cope with all weather types magically "as 4*4's are great".

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

Sad to say that an "instructor" is simply someone who relates the general concept of car driving and control to the very basic standard required by the driving test.

All that jazz

There's an LGV examiner (not instructor) at my local DSA test centre that does not even possess a LGV licence.eek

How is that one possible??

Further update on the OP, the woman in question decided to drive down the icy track this afternoon and got stuck, and for the second time crashed the Shogun into the same fence she crashed into last time....

Don't confuse "ignorance" with "stupidity".

Ignorance is simply a lack of knowledge and easily rectified.

Stupidity is more problematic.....

Well id be inclined to think that with the driving instructors stupidity - she gets away with it because imo people are only taught to pass a test.

The bit about the examiner without a HGV licence testing people driving HGVs is unbeliveably bad.

I had a situation in college though last year in college where we were doing communication in business as one of our modules. Yet our lecturer wasn't all that good at actually - you know communicating.

Yes she could talk all about the theory of good communication and everything - but her ability to actually communicate wasn't all that great.

Did your mate say it would be ok? If so, it is 100% his fault. She will blame him for the damage, never trust his opinion on anything ever again and forever bad mouth him to all her woman friends.

The opposite, of course, is true - people driving far too slowly through what is effectively light slush where there is plenty of grip available.
