The M1 motorway has been closed in South Yorkshire after a pedestrian was struck by a lorry on the carriageway.
South Yorkshire Police said it happened at junction 34 near Meadowhall at 11:50 GMT, and an ambulance remains at the scene of the accident.
The motorway is closed in both directions, between junction 34 and 35 at Thorpe Hesley, and it is not likely to re-open until 16:00 GMT.
Traffic is being diverted off the motorway.

Why shut the motorway for so long?

To enable a thorough and proper investigation if the pedestrian has died?

Because a thorough investigation is more important than a bit of traffic?

I would imagine it is not a pretty sight a full investigation and clean up will be required.

They'd best put speed bumps along the M1 then! Despite the fact pedestrians shouldn't be on the motorway.

(Some speed limits in MK have been reduced due to pedestrians killed - whilst on NSL roads and avoiding using the provided bridges and underpasses.

We don't know all the facts. Maybe they were walking to a breakdown-phone?)

could have been a pedestrian from a broken down vehicle making their way to a phone.

I would have thought once the accident scene is cleared, not more than an hour say, then there is no point in gawping at an empty motorway for the next 3 hrs. I think this 'motorway' closing thing is getting out of control, ridiculous. Nearly missed a Heathrow flight just before Christmas for a relatively minor rear end shunt on the M25. Closed the carriageway for two and half hours.

That was my first thought - probably someone lost control and went off the main carriageway and hit a pedestrian on or by the hard-shoulder.

Heartless b*stards. Assuming someone has had a pretty unpleasant death, surely it's worth finding it EXACTLY what happened so their loved ones can have some closure? If it takes until 1600, so be it.

Maybe. Ambulance was on scene within 15 minutes. Left 30 minutes later. Assume all casualities had been removed from scene. So why so long to then remove a couple of slightly bent cars? I only had a £7000 holiday at risk. First for 4 years.

Sometime people get injured without the slightest thought as to how much your holiday cost. Selfish bds.

Just because an ambulance has left the scene doesn't mean that an investigation has finished or that anyone has is even in the ambulance.

The police don't close the road lightly, they realise it causes a lot of bother to people, but if it was a member of your family member hit, you'd probably want to know some details, not just expect them to be peeled off the road surface and for the road to immediately re-open as soon as possible.

Maybe time to start thinking about others and not just yourself? There is more to life than money and a holiday.

Theoretical situation for you to think about. The person killed was a member of your family, the lorry driver goes to court and would have gone down for death by dangerous driving but instead gets let off because a thorough investigation wasn't carried out.

How do you feel about your holiday then?

again - it's not all about you - your holiday wasn't at risk assuming you had proper travel insurance.

I'm sorry, but it doesn't seem like there's a lot of investigating to be done.

If the ped was in a live carriageway, then ped's fault. If the ped was on the hard shoulder, the driver's fault. Establishing the point of impact should be all that's necessary. Plus photos for the case or coroner and some light clean up work...

Perhaps it's more a case of having to wait for all the different agencies that now seem to be involved to each independently turn up.
