At the start of July this year six of us (late twenties) + toddler will hopefully be heading to the south coast of Spain to rent a villa. However collectively we know very little about the various Costas, so I thought we might benefit from some PH expertise.

Ideally we are looking for a location which offers a good mix of nice beaches, away from the larger/chavvy(?) resorts but still close to a town with restaurants/bars for a good night out, and not too far from some cultural interest.

Also - we are conscious of the temperatures at this time of year, particularly with the youngster in mind, so wonder if we should be heading to the eastern end of the coast for just a few degrees relief. And budget I suppose will be mid-range.

So – where should we be heading?

Not quite what you're asking but same area, same climate, same currency so going to suggest it anyway - Vilamoura, Portugal. More up market that most of the Spanish holiday resorts, but cheaper than the higher end Spanish ones like Marbella etc.

Plenty decent beaches around and loads of good restaurants/bars in the marina. If anyone decides they want a stupid night out with all the youths, Albufeira is only a 20min taxi away. Far away enough you'll not need to see any chavs or idiots in Vilamoura itself...

If you stay in somewhere like Vila Sol its completely peaceful and quiet - you have a couple of restaurants/bars within walking distance and you have the lively marina 5 mins away. I compared most of the spanish resorts and a handful of Portuguese also and ended up choosing here to live. As a 30 year old guy I enjoy the peace and quiet here but love having the marina and everything else nearby for when I want it smile
