Having driven a fair amount driving in many different countries over the years, I always look forward to getting back to the UK's roads. They're not perfect, but on balance I think they have a lot going for them.

  • Low probability of encountering a car on your side of the road, overtaking on a blind bend after crossing double white lines.
  • Most drivers are polite and will let you out of junctions.
  • Less tailgating than certain other countries.
  • Cars tend to be better maintained/ you see fewer death traps on the roads.
  • Drink driving is not socially acceptable.
  • We get plenty of warning when we are in a speed camera area.
  • Taxi drivers are less kamikaze than elsewhere.
  • Generally excellent road signage
  • B roads
What does everyone else love about driving on these isles?

Coming back from European roads, in particular German autobahns, I dread coming back to the UK.

Chances are that most vehicles will be driven by people who can drive and have a legitimate licence .

I think you might find people disagree with some of your "plus points there". But yes, it's all relative and depends what other country you're using for comparison.

So, what other country are you using for comparison?

Hate autobahns, I do more miles in Germany than I do in the UK, but give the UK roads everytime! Better road manners, better marked (I really hate driving here (Germany) in the dark if its raining), and about 80% less road works!

I love driving in London. It's like a puzzle game, and a fun wee challenge in it's own right.

They say the UK has the best drivers and the worst. I think that sums it all up nicely.

Closest I get to London is Watford / berkhamsted .
I have driven in India quite a bit and not many bother with a licence . It is easier just to bribe your way out of trouble .
A uk licence is well respected .
We hired a mini bus for a day out . Due to some dodgy driving our driver got pulled over . Turned out he only had a licence for a scooter . He rang a man who knew a man and we were allowed on our way . I drove back smile

The plus points aren't necessarily things which are better in the UK than anywhere else, but on balance, they are things which you don't get elsewhere without other problems.

Other countries of comparison are USA (mainly East or West coastal areas, not been inland much),pretty much every European and Eastern European country, bits of Africa, some Asian and Middle Eastern countries, Hong Kong etc.

There are no minibus taxis here. If you've driven in SA, you'll know what I mean.
White van drivers are saints, by comparison.

The drive via the A12 into east London is of particular note imo.

Generally up here in the far reaches of Scotland i find the driving less of a pressure than driving in the congested south where everyone seems to drive through you and have no patience.
I drove in Los Angeles and found it quite pleasant , apart from the traffic.

Dubai is interesting considering that the locals are guided by Allah or so they believe so.

UK is pretty good, yes. Biggest contrast with continental europe is motorway behaviour where brits often fail in manners and lane control. Continentals do drive in the correct lane, mostly because they are taught to and because police can, and do, stop you. Off the autoroute and they're pretty dreadful. Swiss demonstrate this most, but it's their fear of being caught rather than driving skill.

As an English person in Scotland I have to say how the driving standard is far higher up here. There appears to be an understanding of merge in turn, people let others out of junctions where it's safe to do so, and giving way to another car or bus invariably gets a flash of the hazard warning lights as thanks. It's refreshing.

Oh and the highlands... Brilliant!
