RAF registrations

The sequence is getting near the end ie ZZxxx. What will follow that?

Well, they are re-using old names (Typhoon & Lightning) so why not numbers.

At the curent rate of procuremet, it will take about 200 years to go through the entire ZZ sequence.

They've allocated as far as ZZ600 (doesn't mean they've bought that many - export orders constructed in the UK have UK reg initially). As far as I can see, they don't de-allocate these export reg (I guess so they can bring them back easily for upgrade prog etc)

I am pretty sure there must be vast spare blocks of available serials in the ZP, ZR, ZS range etc.

They jumped to the ZZ range way ahead of schedule with the C17s.

Thanks, ever since i got ecorted out of Marshalls at Cambridge at about 80mph, i prudently took no more interest in RAF planes ( except at Air Shows)

You'd be right - http://www.ukserials.com/ No idea how up to date it really is - there is a defstan (I think) that "explains" the reg sequence but can't find it
