Restaurant in York centre?

Hi, I'm taking my wife to York for the weekend and looking for a nice restaurant I can take her to on a fri night. We are staying in the city centre so would so would be ideal if it was close by.
Had a look on trip advisor, but was wondering if anyone on here had any recommendations

Can't help with the town centre, but in case you fancy going a bit further afield : The Black Swan at Oldstead (about 20 miles away). Absolutely top class food - one of the best places I've ever eaten.

But get yourself to Bettys for brekfast!

I was in York on Saturday and had lunch in a small, French place called 'Rustique'. It was quite lovely! Whether or not it'll be suitable for an evening meal I don't know, but I enjoyed the food.

We're getting the train so will have to be the centre. I seen rustique on trip advisor and certainly had some good reviews, but the missus can be a bit fussy so that might not be up our street.

The Blue Bicycle was good last time I was there (admittedly about 2 years ago).

We also like Michael's Brasserie but I've only been there for lunch so I'm assuming evening meals are of the same quality.

31 castlegate. central. superb. probs best to reserve.

Some good recommendations thanks. Like the look of 31 as its not far from the hotel and be ideal. Haven't really got a budget as its her birthday.

We did the Blue Bicycle last year and I agree it was rather good, and intimate.

The Cedar Grand Hotel was quite an experience too! Very decadent and of a different time, some nice motors out front as well.

MOH always raves about The Blue Bicycle. I personally can echo the sentiments on Betty's for breakfast!

if your hotel is near castlegate you'll be near fossgate/walmgate on which there is...

j bakers - relatively expensive, superb tasting menu
masons bistro - not tried but hear reports good
meltons too - traditional and tapas style sharing stuff, reasonably priced and reliable if not totally mind blowing
khao san rd - superb thai
il paradiso del cibo - cash only great fun tradional italian
barbakan - polish deli/restaurant. superb pierogi
loch fyne - er. loch fyne.
blue bicycle - excellent rep though i've never tried.
mumbai lounge - upmarket curry
el gaucho - excellent argentine steak place

further afield the cedar court and dean court are hotels with nice restaurants. meltons is meant to be good on scarcroft rd. asia gourmet on gillygate does excellent sushi, cafe no 8 is also on gillygate and superb. the city screen bar is good for a snack, harlequins does stunning coffee on kings square, the guy fawkes and lamb & lion are good real ale places with nice food.

there're other places i can't quite bring to mind at the mo.

Well I ended up going to the Mumbai lounge on the fri night which was superb. Somewhere called Prezzo on the sat afternoon for lunch which was ok, then the blue bycycle on the sat night which was fantastic!
