Hi,

I should probably get my waterpump swapped on my 330ci. Im aware there are a multitude of threads about why and when.

Realistically, how much is reasonable in terms of parts and hours of labour? Could a good, indy non-BMW garage who I trust do the job easily if i get the part (they are VW specialists).

Yours - a very innocent car owner who Is barely able to build an airfix kit!

Easy job - I did mine myself on my driveway with just an internet how to guide.
Took a couple of hours to change thermostat, water pump and top up and bleed the coolant system.
On the basis that I was working very slowly I'd expect any competent garage to do it in an hour.

As above its an easy job, 2 hours tops plus price of pump.
As you have to take the belt off have a look at the tentioner it may be worth fitting a new one with a new belt too.

Absolutely imo.

From ECP: Waterpump ranges from £32 to £59.

Not sure how it is on the E46 but if they're going to the bother of changing the waterpump, it might be worthwhile asking them to do the aux/aircon belts at the same time (+/- any hoses that look a little on the ropey side).

My waterpump cost about 30 quid, its a metel impellor type and took an hour to fit, the Antifreeze cost 27 quid from a Dealer, job jobbed, its a very easy job OP try it.

Bit of a thread revival, but what brand are people using for water pumps?

Circoli I have had issues with and is cheapest at £25ish, others available appear to be Airtex £35ish, or HEPU £50 ish? Any others?
Given the cost of fitting it, and the time to get it to a garage etc, cost is not the issue, just trying to avoid cheap parts failing on me!

You can give Mike a shout as he does this for the Zed's, so probably a similar part / job.

I've been lucky with Circoli pumps, CD (Continental Direct) pumps are okay as well. As well as the belts, it's worth unbolting the plastic rollers, flicking the plastic O rings out and fingering a bit of grease in the bearings.

If yours is an auto it will have a viscous fan for which you'll need a 32mm spanner - it's a left hand thread as well.

I'm planning to get him to do my Vanos, so it might yet go to him for the actual work.
However as the GSF spec rad I fitted just over 2years ago has bowed to a leaking mess it's becoming fairly urgent and might have to be done locally. Hence looking at a water pump while the rads out and its drained.
Thanks

Fair enough. Manual, elec fan. Point taken about belt tensioners. Belts are new.

Car is there today, he fits Circoli pumps, one gone in today as it was weeping and had some play as expected. New rad (again, gsf one lasted 2.4 years) header tank, he uses Behr/Hella. Lifetime warranty on all three, ref code for that on the invoice.

The pipe between bottom of header and engine is apparently only available from bmw and we had to wait till the following morning for it, that was totally shot. Top hose and stat being new already, bottom hose ok.

Vanos rebuild, which includes rocker cover gasket (the leak of which triggered this job) should solve the mild 4k flatspot, and headlight rebuild as it was leaking and trim round the xenon had fallen off and was rattling around.

MOT next week....

Also worth checking the age of the battery as well...had a funky flat spot on the Z4...

This was months after doing the timing chain, spark plugs, coil packs and Vanos solenoids...no error codes, but sluggish response and poor mpg.

Changing the battery brought it back to life and (in addition to all the other work!) and it's been running pretty well ever since.

Check out Mike's exhaust mod as well btw, absolutely brilliant for the money.

Ah right, that odd. Even though it was presumably starting and charging fine?

He was doing an exhaust when I collected the car but only spoke about it in passing. My back box is getting a bit rotten but ok for now. At the mods performance or sound track focused?

There's loads of threads on the Z4 forum - he's done quite a few and can try and tailor the noise to the how loud you want it..

Here's an example - https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t...

And no drone party

you can search on there for DLV exhaust and get an idea of what everyone thinks...
