Hi, i've got a 52 plate Golf Gti 1.8t it coming up to 95,000 miles.

i'm stuck in two minds as to what to do

I doubt it's worth much now seeing as its 10 years old, but (touch wood) its been a good runner. bodywork is great, but I'm wondering what I can get that is more of a 'mature car' (turning 30 this year) I could put down £3-£4k and would have to get a loan.

I like A5's but I guess they're out of my price range, any thoughts?

Keep the Golf and save until A5 prices fall down to your level.

I really wanted an Elise to replace my last MR2. I kept that MR2 for seven years before I got the Elise.

If the Golf is running well, then save up for a few years if you can. I know it's hard to stay put, but us wise old PH'ers know best

It really depends on condition, my 200SX has 108,000 and is sweet as a nut!

It all depends whos looked after it, what engine it is etc etc!

Hell, you could find one with 15,000 miles but the owner may have ragged it from cold everywhere smile

By the same token, once your Golf has hit 100k it's value will go into free fall. A year's saving is only going to cover the depreciation it's about to take, so in that respect you're not necessarily putting yourself any further forward.

I wouldn't go to the extreme of dripping yourself up with a 15-20k motor such as the A5 you're wanting, but instead would get shut of the Golf now and be half sensible about what you buy next. You'd be surprised at how much car £5-6k will get you. What is it about the A5 you like so much? Are their any other older coupes you like the look of?

There really isn't a sensible answer to that question. It depends on the car, the type of driving its been used for, the service history, and all sorts of other things. I wouldn't even consider mileage as a factor on most cars at under about 100k and nothing under 150k would really put me off if everything seems in good condition.

More mature than a Golf GTi ! rofl

Get a newer one - they mainly seem to be driven by yummy mummys and retired people.

Get a mk3 MR2. Will be a hell of a lot more reliable than your golf, even with 100k+ miles, and cheaper to run too.

Isn't a Golf an old mans car anyhow?

I disagree with both of those points. The depreciation on a 5-6k car will certainly be higher.

The depreciation on a 5-6k car will be higher, it's of greater value, that's inevitable. The Golf, albeit small, still has some value before it hits the 100k milestone, would it not be prudent to move it on now if the OP is yearning for a new car, as apposed to footing the additional cost for another year's depreciation?

being 95k or 105k on an 11 year old Golf will make next to no odds to it's value.

It does, it makes a difference in book value and makes a bigger difference when it comes to ease of resale. I do this for a living and have spent many years observing people's buying habits.

need to rob a bank to get a RS6
