Hi folks

My son (18 with full car license) is interested in having a quad bike on the road and I was after some advice as I know absolutely nothing about them.

What license do you need?
How safe are they compared to bikes?
What's a good make/what's a good starter quad?
What's the insurance like and who insures them?
How much is tax?

Thanks in advance for your help.

They are also more dangerous than motorcycles in my opinion. Less stable in corners and under braking, and if it ends up on top of you, you're in trouble.

All the cons of a bike combined with all the cons of a car. You'll be cold, wet and unable to filter through traffic.

There's one or two in the local town to me with road going quads. Road tyres, lower suspension. A real shame that both are driven like complete and utter twonks. If that's what happens when such people ride these as "transport" then you'd be better off shooting the person beforehand.

Seriously as a farm utility vehicle I can see the point of them. But they have to be the biggest compromise ever for anything else. If they really want a rugged open air 4 wheel experience a purpose built buggy would be far superior and safer. Or go for a proper bike.

It will get stolen if you leave it unattended for more than five minutes.

Ive got a 250cc quad bike, road legal racing style. Lowered suspension with a bodykit, alloys and low profile tyres. What sort of roads is he likely to use it on? On mine I rarely go over 50mph and only really on decently surfaced roads, can get rather hairy. Insurance on it was 800 in the first year, I was 18 aswell, had been driving a car for just under a year. Helmet isn't needed but definitely recommended. Tax is the same as a decent engine sized car, cost me £74.50 for 6 months, isn't really fair as motorbikes with engines much bigger pay less but as its got 4 wheels its much more expensive. If you need any more info drop me a pm smile

Quad bikes are fun to drive on dirt because there is very little grip and they generally have no rear differential. They will normally slide rather than flip, and can be driven in a constant state of oversteer like a complete hooligan. It's great.

On the road there is lots of grip. Quads with no rear differential handle like a bh- the don't want to turn at all then when they do they want to flip over. Because there is no differential, they will continue to drive even with the inside rear wheel is in the air and this can get very dangerous very quickly. Because of this dangerous flaw, lots of quads designed for the road have a rear differential. This makes them safe and more controllable, but about as fun as a hernia.

So in short:
Quad+dirt=fun
Quad+road=tosh

Tell your boy to either get a motorbike for the road, or an off road quad and find somewhere off road to ride it.

They seem to be often driven rather antisocially.

All the disadvantages of a car, and none of the advantages of a bike.

Not worth it.
Exactly this.

They are possibly the most useless forms of on-road transport.

A motorbike will handle/accelerate better and be safer IMO (plus cheaper on insurance and things)
If you want 4 wheel safety, get a car, they'll be warmer/more comfy.
