Seriously?????

If you have 'definately' got insurance then you must have paid for it - can't you check your statements / credit card bills ?

Check bank statements
direct debits
credit cards
emails for notifications from insurer when you set up policy

Virgin have never ballsed up my account for more than a day, so hopefull you'll be able to check your e-mails tomorrow.

Failing that have you tried looking in the place where you keep your V5 and MOT? That's where my insurance documents are and I can't think of any reason why everyone else doesn't do the same.

Virgin ballsed up my email account months ago and I've got tired of talking to our Indian friends over the phone, when I try and log in it tells me to contact myself for help !!

Not with the V5/MOT.
Could have arrived electronically though.

Assuming you did not pay cash. Look up bank/card statements.

It'll be Aviva. wink

I read a news story of someone whose house burned down, destroying all his docs, and he couldn't remember who he was insured with. Took 2 weeks to track down the insurer.

ETA: Just seen you're a civil servant, so the logical one would be Frizzell (LV=).

It's not usually worth cancelling insurance though - you'll get sod all back.

Got it !!

Found on a c/card statement, missed it because it was an obscure name that I didn't recognised. Its a totally on-line system so no documents/emails go out so its all on-line.

Phew - I am insured !!

The cops could soon tell you if you pissed them off, so, why not go to the local cop shop and explain your predicament, they may be prepared to assist you?
