Hi.
Let me start off with the fact that Im 20 years old 2 years NCB.

My insurance is running out in March and Ill have around £6k for the car and insurance.

I am currently set for a BMW 330ci. Probably a 2002 unless I can find a cheap 2004 one.

However, BMWs in general arent really cars with a young spirit. Its to be taken seriously.

Although I still love them I also wanna consider something a bit more bonkers. Something to put a big grin on my face. Something to match my age really.

Was looking at a Type R, a 2007 is around 6 grand on its own though :/ So I wouldnt have the money for insurance.

Focus ST? RS? Are they any good? You can find a 2006 model for around 5k but then again that will mean Ill have to wait for the insurance a bit.

I own a 99 golf at the moment so Im not really too interested in a mk4 gti. Want something fresh. mk5s start around 5-6k. A bit too much yet again.

Mini in my eyes is a chicks car. You wont see me driving that ever. Sorry to insult any mini enthusiasts.

RX8 is a lovely car but the rotary engine could turn out to be a handful if anything goes wrong.

Any suggestions? I know its cliche but something fastish (6-8sec 0-60) and something for my age :P

Ahem.

Nothing wrong with a BMW at 20. In fact, it's great.

Any specific reason why you need a car with 5 seats and a boot?

Unfortunately I dont much like the EP3 model. Loots a little too square. Im after the FN2 if anything.

Well I do carry mates around and I drive to work sometimes whilst giving my parents a lift to theirs so 5 seats is preferable but not something I wouldnt consider changing.

Thats not a good enough reason for back seats. I was a bit funny about it at first, but once I sold a hatchback and bought a 2 seater I realised just how silly it was driving orund cars designed for people who have kids.

Your young, go for it. Its much, much more fun driving silly small cars.

Indeed, I bought my E46 328i at 20. Granted I know how to drive quickly and how to have fun with RWD, but it's not like it's a dangerous thing to learn these skills in! A fantastic car that is as at home cruising in comfortable silence as it is ripping a back road into little sideways pieces driving

A 330ci would be excellent for you, if you ask me.. Proper car. Makes a great noise and loves to be hammered - these chassis really come alive at the limit - and versatile with it. Economical as well, 30mpg average or 36-38 on motorways, if that's a concern. But hopefully it isn't!

Ahhh I know! :P The 330ci is nice, and its around 3-5k which is nicely within my budget. Beautiful blue as well. But then the boy racer part of my brain is like "Hey, you know that amazing 2007 red civic type r you saw on ebay the other day for 6 grand? I think you should wait 2 more months and get that" Even though its a bh on motorways and might at some point break my back :P

hehe

Well, this is the thing. If you really can be a child all the time, then something like a Civic Type R will be great and probably more entertaining than the BMW most of the time. But if you do long journeys, or drive family around, or generally do anything at all that might require some refinement then there's just no contest. Badge and image don't hurt, nor do things like the quality of the leather and so on. And I get precisely zero police attention, not to be said for hot hatches.

The thing I like is that I have very good chunks of both worlds - I can go from a refined almost-barge to a sharp and urgent B-road blaster just by turning off the motorway and dropping some gears! If you only need one of those worlds, then you can find it better in a smaller car. But life is generally more compromised than that!

Hmmmmm, age 20, with 6K for a performance car and the insurance...

that'll leave 50p for the car then.

Not read about all of us guys going around in 328is, 330cis and 7-series and the like?

My premium was £750 this year, and I'm only just 21.

The CTR is £1800 with both of my parents as additional drivers. I can manage that.

And yeah I get what you mean with having good of both worlds. But frankly Im a bit of a simpleton :P I like a bonkers car more then a sensible car.

Many people I talk to tell me Im wrong but I buy a car with my heart not with my head. It costs me sometimes but hey.

Just a little update on my financial situation.

I looked on ebay. A nice FN2 2007/08 CTR is around 8-9k with somewhere between 20-30k miles. I can afford that I just need to wait half a year or so. And im starting to lean towards that a little bit as I think its a car more suited for my age and my personality.

Before any of you start thinking "another little prick on the road" :P Well yeah I am but ONLY when Im the only one on that road. In my head its "See another car? Drive normally. No cars? Floor it" :P

I had a 318 aged 19 (just after birthday) and a 330ci aged 21 (now 22 and it cost £770 fully comp(not cheapest)).
Cheaper for me to insure a 330ci than a 1.8 MK4 Golf GTI... go figure.
Only ever paid over 1k for insure for a 1l saxo...

Yeah the 130 was the 3rd option for me. But I think it is waaaaaaay behind the CTR is styling.
As I said before CTR is a bit nuts, I like that.
