Hi folks

Any news as to whether ESPN will be continuing with NHRA this year? If the the main ESPN folds [as is expected without the footie] I assume that it will continue on ESPN America. It has been broadcast on that channel as well as the main one last year. I wonder whether ESPN America will charge a lesser amount for the subs??

Exactly who expects ESPN to fold "without the footie". Premiership football is just 2 or 3 hours per week on average on ESPN so hardly likely to close because of that. I know they have also lost the rugby, but again, unlikely to cause them any real problems. I cannot imagine too many of ESPN customers migrating to the new BT sports channel just because of that. I know I won't.

Lake, I can just imagine that your glass is always half empty.

Quite the contrary, I'm a very jolly and happy chap, and no real need to take a pop. The Guardian, BBC, Daily Telegraph and The Week magazine all speculated that ESPN may close the main channel because the main subscription income was from Footie and Rugby. Fans, I would guess, need access to all the matches to follow their teams.

Anyway, so you don't know whether they're showing NHRA then? Jeez, it was just a question. Sigh....

Ah, speculation, the lifeblood of forums such as this. Let me remind/inform you that ESPN was going way before they acquired Premiership football. They only got it about 3 years ago when Setanta went belly-up.

They will still have a lot of football on ESPN such as the FA Cup, Scottish football, friendlies etc, etc. Don't know if they will be showing a Premiership highlights package or not. Anyway, I fully expect to be watching the NHRA on ESPN for some years to come.

Ah, expectation "the act or the state of expecting: to wait in expectation". Let's hope our expectation is realised then. wink

Good news folks.
I have been reliably informed that ESPN UK will indeed be covering the NHRA 2013 season !

At the moment, it's scheduled on ESPN America on Tuesday 19th at 1530-1730 (qualifying) and Wednesday 20th at 1900-2130 for the eliminations.

I cancelled my subscription cause they constantly get the scheduling wrong, record NHRA turn it on to find baseball or whatever. Much easier to just follow the you tube channel for free

There can be late changes to the programming as there can on any cable channel. If you bookmark the broadcast a week in advance, then yes, there probably will be changes. It's best to check the schedule a few hours in advance of the broadcast to make sure it's going ahead on time.

I only got caught out once last year for one of the September meetings when, due to Indy being delayed by a week, there were 4 successive race meetings. The eliminations were due to be broadcast at 1930-2200 hours. I checked a few hours prior and that was still the case. I tuned in at 1920 and was amazed to find that I was catching the last 10 minutes of it! I only saw the FC and TF finals. It had started at 1700 hours instead of 1930. Even the on screen schedule on the channel said it was on at 1930! So, last minute change or human error?

So MajorLucky, for you to say "they constantly get the scheduling wrong" is misleading.

They get it wrong more than they get it right. As for waiting until the last minute to check the listings... what's the point in having listings? I get the feeling that viewing numbers are so low that ESPN don't pay much attention to the few.

Its great coverage. 100% recommend it. Occasional scheduling changes happen, but not often. Best thing on TV.

Not wrong, I would say about 10 program's were miss timed last year, I ended up recording every scheduling trying to catch it, when your paying for ESPN just to watch the racing I expect to see it. I sent a couple of emails complaining but heard nothing as expected.

I can recall many a time when I knew it hadn't recorded as I saw on FB others already complaining about it

Totally agree. I think that, as it's run on a shoestring here in the UK, it works well. I have never actually missed anything just by keeping my eye on the schedule and repeats. Long may it continue.

Agreed! The only thing that sometimes annoys me about it is that occasionally the broadcast starts part way through it. This is usually when the preceeding programme is a "live" broadcast. These are usually repeats of a match that is broadcast live and over-runs. The repeat is just shown as-is, ie not edited down to make sure it fits in the original time slot. I guess you could be right Lakepipe in saying it's run on a shoestring in the UK.
