My Chim is now due for a service (12K) and I really cant decide where to take it.

Do I take it to TVR or a specialist. Having looked at the prices (I know this shouldnt sway the decision) but at TVR its £650 () but at Austec its around £300. I know there are a few of you guys who have used Austec out there and know your opinions (all good) but am really in a quandry.

Any advice is gratefully received.

i'm going there weds for a full service.

They have been very commonsensical so far, I'll let you know how I find them if that helps, although I probably couldnl't comment on the ralative quality of the owrk itself.

Go wherever you get on with the people involved.

Main dealers will be more, but should have the support to do everything needed. Independents tend to be in the business because it is a passion. You might pay less but you won't get lesser attention. Reputation is more important for an independent, too. So they won't stay in business if they haven't maintained a good reputation.

oh - and all people are capable of making mistakes, some seem better at putting them right than others - it's the people you can get on with and who can give you the right assurances that you want to deal with.

Beano's nailed it - it's the whole experience, not just the cheapest price.

I've got nothing against Austec (in fact I took advantage of a summer special deal for a mid year check up at Motorvation before it moved away from my location and transitioned into Austec). But I will put in a very strong plug for Racing Green as a TVR main dealer. I'm exceptionally happy with the quality of service they've provided for my 450 over the past 18 months and really look forward to visits there. More expensive (if your numbers are correct) - yes, but I didn't buy into the TVR experience to marginalise it by saving a few hundred pounds here or there. I want something more than just economy servicing and for me that means an operation like Racing Green. So the moral: You pay your money and make your choice.

Have used Austec and must give them full marks for the quality of their work and value for money---and you get a RR session thrown in. I am not entirely convinced that the "FTVRSH" carries so much weight nowadays when selling since there are so many very good and concientious independent specialists.

Further to beano500's comments, Austec were more than fair in resolving an aspect of their work I was not happy with recently. When I phoned up to address the issue, they refunded the money onto my card over the phone, before they'd even seen the car to confirm it was their problem. They then went on to resolve the issue and have kept a satisfied customer as a result, I am hoping to book my next full service at their open day.

Ed 400, Austec open day is this Sunday 12 Sept lunchtime, free bbq, all welcome, come along and make your own mind up about them!

good experience yesterday, bar not having a courtesy car at short notice, but minor as they gave me lifts to/from the station without question.

noted all my niggly car concerns abotu the car abnd addressed each of these in turn, very sensible.

Good conversation with paul, who seems extremely competant and down to earth, on how the car is set up and what was done and what could be done.

Car running very well now. I'll be going back regularly.

But don't all rush at once, as there's already a 1 month wait.

In fact they're crap. Maybe that'll shorten the waiting time.

cu sunday perhaps.

I have now booked it in with Austec, wont be until early October though. Mind you, I took it to TVR a month or so ago and that was a 2 week wait. Popping down on Sunday to meet the guys, the chap I spoke to on the phone certainly seemed to know what he was talking about!
