It's finally happened to my trusty machine and, as the search facility is furbarred, I can't (be bothered?) refer back to previous threads.

So, is it best just to go out and buy a new machine and swap the "hard disk" over from the old one with all of my save games? Or is it worth having the thing fixed?

New machines aren't that expensive now. So, I'm thinking of just heading over to ASDA to pick up a new one this evening.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Well, there are a few tricks of the trade, i used toturn it on, block the fans with two long things, wait for it to heat up, the light stops flashing, then you leave it to cool down and off you go, it's temporary.

Or, if you are feeling technical, you can buy a small tube of good quality heat paste and put it on the heat sinks on the main board, a fiddle to get in to but also solved my RROD. I did buy a new one, but the original box with that fix still lives on.

Yeh the heat paste and clamp is a common fix. Kits including all you need are readily available on Ebay/Amazon. The fix, if done correctly, can last for years.

However I am guessing that you have and old white Xbox, so buying a new 4GB one and swapping the hard drives giving you a much newer, quieter and reliable machine is also a good option.

Bear in mind that swapping the hard drive over involves removing the case from the original and having to bodge a spacer into the new box to support it.

Oh really?

I thought you can just swap the 'tops' over.

I dont think you can with the new smaller ones. I had to use a data transfer cable to get my saved games across.

Check on Xbox website as if its the first time it's gone wrong they will repair for free. They send out carrier to collect and then it normally returned within a week.

I'm happy to do so. But, I've got over 20 hours of Far Cry 3 on my old machine and I'd love to be able to switch the save game over from my HDD.

BTW, this teaches me to store my save games in The Cloud in future.

Mine went pop just before crimbo too (red ring of death). Straight out to get a replacement of course - I couldn't be arsed sending it back to be fixed for it to go bang again, at £60.

[Tin foil hat mode] What if Microsoft send signals to their boxes when they want a sales push scratchchin

How does wrapping a towel around the machine stop the RROD?

You can switch memories..... I have a cable which you're welcome to borrow/have. Your current disc attaches to the cable and the cable goes in the new machine. The new machine knows what what you want to do when the old disc is plugged in so there's a menu to guide you. I transferred all the memory and game saves etc to my new machine.

Ping me a PM if you need it.

Thanks for that. I really appreciate it. However, simultaneously to you posting your generous offer I found the Microsoft data transfer cable which will do the job. I might as well spend £12 for the cable.

My problem is solved.

All I did when my old white xbox had RROD, was buy the cheapest new style xbox (the one without the 250gb HD). Take the old original HD out of it's case. Then take the bottom plate off the new xbox and insert the old HD. Jobs a gooden.

So, the old HDD fits into the new xbox? The guys @ GAME are decent blokes. That's why their branch survived last year's cull. I'll go with what they say.

You'll need a data transfer cable first though.
