Wasn't exactly sure where to put this topic, either in music or one of the regional forum, so I figured i'd bung it in the lounge and see where it landed.

We're getting married later this year in East Yorkshire. (Near Hull to be precise, but please don't let that put you off)

Anyway... we need a band.

We'd prefer someone who can offer a decent range of music rather than just playing swing, or just playing the 60's etc. Just regular popular music from the last 40 years or so should do it! Typical wedding stuff.

Can anyone recommend one?

Cheers

Shame you're in the North East, bit too far for us, but we do allsorts from the last 40 years; Chuck Berry to The Kings of Leon, and a lot inbetween.

We charge £450 for a wedding to give you an idea.

We're called Jacob's Ladder, we're on Facebook

I hope you get something sorted

Hopefully you won't mind a bit of advice ....
We booked a band for our own wedding 6 months ago (ECHO in Swindon) and they were great.
However we had all sorts of hassle before we found them. The 'agencies' on line that we tried had some very interesting contract. The worst one we saw was that in providing them our address for them to send the band's demo we were agreeing to hiring the band !!

be careful and read the small print... or as we found, use a local band and deal directly with them.

Gold is traditional. Platinum is nice (although I do see some matt-finish platinum bands which strikes me as odd). Titanium seems quite popular these days (and is cheap). Personally I don't like jewels in a simple band - bit too flashy.

Titanium is nice but can't be resized. I chose white gold but needs replating already. Paladium seems popular at the moment.

These guys perform at the Silverstone F1 Camp site and are awesome! About £1000-£1500 I think they said it would be for a wedding

We found some absolute stinkers when we were looking for our band.

One tip I can give you is to download the sample tunes and compare them - it seemed almost every band was covering 'Valerie' at the time we were looking (2009) so we downloaded each band's version and picked the best.

Also, check how much playing time you'll get for your money and whether the band will allow you to split that time across the evening.
We chose Laughing Jacks who did 2 hours split into 2x30 mins and an hour at the end - the band chose the music according to the time of evening they played, so older (Rat Pack/Big Band) stuff early on for the parents/grandparents to dance while the younger lot were in the bar, then more contemporary as the evening went on up to disco and recent chart stuff by the end of the night - everyone who was left at midnight was drunk and dancing, while the oldies didn't feel left out when they left earlier in the evening - everyone was catered for, just how a wedding do should be.

To do that though you have to book a versatile band so look at the songs they cover and try to avoid one whose repetiore is all songs of a similar type or limited to a couple of dozen songs.

Laughing Jacks are Newcastle based, and while North Yorks isn't too far, I'm not sure how far they'll travel (or how much extra it would cost) but I'd recommend them unreservedly.

Try the guys: http://www.swingthingduo.co.uk/

They performed at the Porsche Festival at Lotherton Hall last year and I thought they were very good. One of them was a salesman at the Leeds Porsche Centre but has since left to commit to the music.
