Facelift Fiesta, case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'?
Discussion
Drove passed the local Ford agent last night and was 'confronted' by the new face of the Fiesta. Christ, what's happened here? I didn't think it was in the slightest bit attractive and didn't think the old one needed tweaking. The idea that it is meant to look akin to an Aston is just plain silly. At a glance you would never think it had taken inspiration from the Aston and to my eyes it is no improvement on the previous, not-that-old, prettier model.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks that new grille is truly gopping. What pisses me off even more is all the morons saying this and the new Mondeo look like Aston Martins. BEFORE:

They don't. They look like a standard Eurobox with a hideous blingy grille grafted on the front.
Nasty.
A very disappointing facelift I think. The original looked fantastic (we had one) - and it still looks fantastic.
This one is a change for changes sake. Ford are going a little off track at the moment. The Focus is incredibally fussy with lines and creases all over the place. The new Kuga looks awful too. Built for the USA with the looks of it.

I had the choice of waiting for the facelift, or purchasing last of the old. I somehow managed to find a leaked image on the internet in August sometime, and decided there and then to buy mine.
The only thing I'd like to try would be the 1.0 3cyl which puts out similar power, but I do like the lightly fettled Sigma lump in mine.

In 1994, Aston Martin releases this:

A few years later, Ford gets Ian Callum to design this for them:

Why do I get the idea Ford has done something not dissimilar using this as its muse?:

Made a car that looks nothing like an Aston Martin again you mean? In 1994, Aston Martin releases this:

The Fiesta has a bizarre and totally out of keeping Aston-esque grille, but the rest of the car looks as much like a Vantaqe as a Puma looks like a DB7. Nothing like.

Now look at that deep swage line indenting the side of the Fiesta, contrast it with the Aston. The lights on the Aston hint at slightly sharper edges than its DB9 stablemate - this is taken to extremes on the Fiesta. Then there's the line of the side-windows, ending in an upswept point, again similar to the AMV8. And look at the endentation in the Fiesta's bootlid. Sure, they've moved the light clusters upwards compared to the AMV8, but the suggestion of its kamm-tail is still there.
Ford has regularly done this, working subtle cues from exotic cars into affordable things to make them look glamorous. The Capri was the most obvious and blatant example - there are bits of Aston DBS, Ferrari Daytona, Ford Mustang, even Porsche 911 in it. And this was all very deliberate - they asked potential buyers what their favourite car was and designed a kind of mishmash of all of them.
What is this obsession with enormous grilles?
Aston+Audi particularly guilty of it at the moment. They aren't a particularly great looking thing no matter what you do with them so why make them so big?
Is it because big grilles gives the impression there a monster of an engine lurking behind it instead of the likely 1.6 diesel unit?

I suspect it's because they disguise the height of the bonnet thanks to pedestrian-impact bolliolocks.Aston+Audi particularly guilty of it at the moment. They aren't a particularly great looking thing no matter what you do with them so why make them so big?

More expensively-engineered cars set their engines lower down in the chassis, but cheaply-engineered family stuff has no such luck. Shame. Wish manufacturers would develop lower-profile engines, maybe even flat-fours or even flat-twins for small cars. Ultra-compact.

k with a facelift. Look at the Hyundai Coupe (from Gen 1 to Gen 2), Grande Punto to Punto Evo, most BMWs, etc.
