Hi all

I genuinely hope that this thread doesn't touch a nerve with the people who got screwed over by these guys whilst selling their cars (i just did a quick search for them) but Iam looking to buy a Cerb that had a clutch change done there and wanted to call them to verify etc, however I understand that they went pop (and took many people's money with them) so obviously cant call.

Does anyone have any experience of using them for mechanical work? Should their work be trusted? The clutch was changed back in 2011.

Any feedback would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks

J

I think you've answered your own question by the things you've put in the first paragraph.

If that's the level of their moral & ethical standards would you trust the quality of work they did as well?

I know, this is what worries me, but im trying to get a balanced view on whether to pass on the car or not because of it. I wondered if anyone had good experiences before the bad stuff happened?

Its only a clutch. If it works OK they can't have done that bad a job. I would be more worried about its other service history than just one visit to a place of alleged ill repute...and also on condition. Maybe get someone you trust to check it over for you?

Agreed, this is sound advice and what I was thinking.

I have a local Indy booked to take it for a test drive and put it on a ramp for me before I make the 2 hour drive to look at it.

Thanks all.

My concern would be was it done properly, did they mess anything up, did they actually do it... etc etc?

When your independant gives you a list of their recommendations of work that needs doing add the cost of a replacement clutch to it and do your deal to allow you to be comfortable with the work to be done. How many miles has it done since the clutch replacement?

Are you sure it was 2011? I thought they went before that? (I may be wrong, I am getting old)

I didn't stick my oar in anything, I just referred to the OP's original post.

No I never did and glad I didn't.

N&S is to protect businesses still operating from one sided derogatory comments. DM are no longer operating so N&S doesn't apply and anyway the facts are pretty plain to see in this thread of the time:

Dm weren't open in 2011, I bought my TVR in August 2010 and theyhad already ben shut for a while then. I have work done on my car by John at Sussex TVR who used to be TVR tech at DM and he is very good.

The problem with DM was the management (cowboys) not the techs. IIRC the main tech there was pretty good and although they ripped a lot of customers off with SoR cars it does not mean they also carried out shoddy work in the workshop. Prior to all this happening they had a pretty good rep.

john the tech was very good.i have had a few things done by him whilst at dms and was very pleased.i dont think the services or the mechanical stuff were a problem just the owner.the service dept had a very good reputation up to the demise.

The thread's about one Cerb and its clutch fixed by DM's that a potential buyer may be interested in.

You come along and stick your oar in (oh I said it again)
quote "If that's the level of their moral & ethical standards would you trust the quality of work they did as well?"

That's supposing all their work was not so good from day one? A little harsh I would suggest?

As for the N and S ....I have a portfolio full of the low morals and crap standards of still trading TVR so called specialists as I see it..but that's a nono and another story I mustn't mention here.

As far as the link you copied over..yep I saw it and I read it way back.

Full of people who had no dealings with DM's and had the knives out. which was fair do's if you were one that got turned over. Many didn't and that's my point. You painted all as bad.

I have no idea how long they traded but Sprint used to be happy to carry their ads rolleyes guess they were taken in too then?

BTW As you never used them how can you be glad you didn't?

Back to the OP go for it biggrin ..and use an independent when you need a spanner man.

Back to the OP's question as the clutch was changed in 2011 it would appear that it can't be DM who did the work as they went pop on 2009 so it's strange that there appears to be a DM connection, is there another company with a similar name?

Just my 2p FWIW, During my 10 years as moderator on the TVR forums I can't remember many issues with members reporting any N&S type threads regarding servicing of cars a DM.

However I do remember pulling numerous N&S type threads relating to the way the "unscrupulous owner" conned members on here out of their hard earnt money, myself included but that's another story.

Didn't like removing them and it peeved my greatly at the time, but rules is rules.

So to sum up I think to workshop quality was never in question, only the armhole that ran it.smile

Well said B19Lam. billynomates had just as much spite to contribute to Shorts' 200,000 mile T350 thread and then crawled away without backing up his boll*cks comments. To the OP, this forum is full of helpful advice from lots of like-minded owners, so don't let one troll put you off doing your homework and getting the info you need.

I'm sure I had a thread on here many years ago (circa 2006) where I was less then impressed with their quality of work - something to do with charging me for suspension dampers that were never changed, but that's just my one sided story and DM won't be coming on here to argue against it.rolleyes
