I've never been to Crail raceway, but I'm aiming to go with my camera to try my hand at some motorsport photography/filming. They have a couple of events next month so I'll probably go to one of them.

Anyone been? What's the atmosphere like or is it all a bit Neddy? What is the average attendance on a dry day?

Cheers!

Edit: Also anyone have any other suggestions for possible meets/events where I could get a look in?

Really depends on what day you go, strip or drift etc.

Obviously, something like a french hot hatch meet may turn out rather neddy but the SXOC drift days i've been to are pretty good. Alongwith Banzai etc!

I used to go to Crail a lot but as previously mentioned it depends on what sort of thing you are looking for. In my experience if I wanted to see just how many different ways there were to bastardise a 1 Litre Saxo I'd go to Crail. That's not to say all days are like that.

Perhaps Knockhill or something like that would be better.

Hadn't even thought of Knockhill! banghead

Was mainly thinking Crail as getting good access probably wouldn't be too tricky, I'll fire an email to Knockhill and see what they have to say.

There is good access for photography around most of Knockhill, and you can get to the inside of the track as well by crossing the bridge. Entry will be free for any track days and race practice days, but you would need to pay a if it was a race day.

There are now high level safety fences around the outside of Duffus (Seat Curves) until the exit of McIntyres, and also around the outside of the chicane. However there are plenty of good viewpoints between these where you can practice panning shots etc., and there are sometimes holes in the fences at strategic points that you can put your camera through.

A good place to start learning motorsport photography is at the hairpin, as not only do you have a low waist height wall to shoot over, but a grandstand area to help shelter from the wind and rain. The cars will be going a lot slower as well and you have plenty of time to prepare for each shot as you can see them coming down the back straight.

You would need £5M Public Liability Insurance and a covering letter from an editor or media outlet to get trackside.

You'll be very welcome at any of the sprint or hillclimb events.

Some examples of the work of others here.

Yes, I was going to suggest the sprint/hillclimb scene. Forrestburn and Kaimes are excellent places with plenty of vantage points. Doune is a bit trickier in that there are lots of places to go, but it can be tough to get an image that's different from the herd.

Aargh! This is going to be the downfall of the www.........everyone has an opinion, but most are unqualified!

Yes! Crail attracts all sorts, but along with Saxo's you do get Porsche's, Lambo's, Ferrari's, Cossies, AMG's as well as the UK's fastest GTR..........so,come along and decide for yourself. Magazine days do attract the fancier stuff but the Wallace Evo's regularly make an appearance (quite often) and usually come 2nd to Scroggies 10 year old GTR that runs 10s 1/4 miles time after time!
