Hi all, my friend has a Peugeot 107 which suffers from an intermittent problem where the car won't start due to he gearbox not being able to select neutral

After an hour or so the car will start, weird eh!

Car is a 2005 auto. 40,000 miles

Any thoughts would be great as google turned up one result about accelerator not returning to the stop and fixing with wd40, not had a chance to check so thought I would ask here.

Cheers
Matt

Surely it has to be in Park to start. And he couldn't have taken the keys out previously unless it was in Park.

Does not compute...

Try putting it in Neutral. Dunno if this would work, maybe worth a go with mechanical automatics

Try wd40 on the gear selector shift button..
Often get grubby and also stick in colder weather..
To quote another....Surely PARK is the gear to start your car......( press brake pedal at same time ? )
edit: Do you have a "shift lock override" button

How do you know its not selecting neutral? Will the selector physically move to neutral or is there a digital indicator somewhere to show you want gear its in (sorry don't know the vehicle)? Just thinking it may be something not related to the gearbox.
