I am now going to demonstrate my ignorance in the most spectacular way!

It appears my 2a probably has 'clutch judder'. It has always had it since I bought it 4 years ago but I've decided it annoys me and I'd like to stop it. Looking at my Haynes manual it says it could be due to 'the power unit mountings being loose or too flexible'. So the stupid question is 'what is the power unit'? Is it the engine? AND, if so, why do they have a whole section on 'the engine' and then go and call it something else when 'engine' would do nicely!
If I lift the revs more I can avoid the judder but obviously don't have the control I need, especially when I tow another vehicle.
Any suggestions or thoughts on how to sort it out? It also suggests a couple of other potential reasons like oil on the clutch or an incorrectly assembled clutch, but with my really limited knowledge I'd like to look for the easiest things first.
Other question: Looking at topping up oil in gearboxes etc, do I put oil through the removable plugs and fill it to the plug and is this just engine oil?

Cheers

Engine and/or gearbox rubber mountings.
Faulty clutch, oil contamination on the clutch plates, badly worn/damaged clutch or a tight spigot bearing. Not really diagnosable without removing the gearbox or taking the engine out to inspect.
List of lubricants here:

Oil change 'how to' here:

Be sure you can remove the filler plug BEFORE draining!eek

Thank you for that info, very helpful. Once the weather improves I'll get underneath and check it out.

Does it happen in 2wd or 4wd or both? I only ask at the uj's in the front axle can give a juddering sensation when you're turning at slow speeds in 4wd.

To be honest I've not tried that. It tends to happen when I pull away in 1st or reverse only.

Most probably oil contamination. The clutch on my S3 was juddering slightly in first and reverse and it was driving me mad. Subsequently, my rocker cover gasket failed spectacularly, sending oil all over the engine, which excacerbated the clutch judder. Having fitted a new gasket and burnt the oil off the clutch plate, all is fine now.

You may have a little leak down the back of the engine which is contaminating the clutch (although, a Landy without a leak is most certainly broken!!!)
