Seems like you can come up with something new for the age old concept of lighting moving on from LEDs

I understand that its a concept so the lights probably wont appear like this ever in real life.

Bet its fking expensive if it gets cracked.

I haven't got any sound on (at work) did they mention why the lights were flowing like fire instead of just being a light?

No reason given for the "flowing" style.

He said that there could be a benefit to an "aminated" turn signal, and also that the lights (near the end when they go white) could be used to show following drivers the shape of the road ahead. I think that sounds like a crap idea. Would it use cameras or the steering input? Don't think I'd want to rely on anything like that for any reason so I'd prefer to go without it. Similarly I didn't like the flowing (animated) nature of the lights as they are distracting.

I think they look cool on a concept car, but hope they never make production in that guise because I can't see a practical benefit to them. They appear to be answering a question that no one asked. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I thought this, then I wondered if it was the filming technique, and if whether viewing it in real life it would appear a solid, continuous light?

You know how the Le Mans cars with LEDs appear on tv to have flashing lights, because of the frequency they flash and the camera not operating at the same frequency, picking up images where there is no light? Similar to when the wheels are going round or the rotors on a helicopter appear to be either going backwards or not moving?

There is a name for the effect but I am not educated enough to remember it...

Exactly. Expensive and irrelevant.

Fun, and looks neat but... utterly pointless and would presumably be horrendously expensive?

Pulse Width Modulation. Where they blink on and off with varying speed to alter percieved intensity. Causes havoc when filmed due to the way a camera works being different to how an eye works.

However I think that applies to "LED's", but not to "OLED displays".

Is that why the headlights flash on Chris Harris's YouTube videos? I wondered what was going on there! Thought it was some kind of trick racing mode or something!

all to do with the 'scan' rate of the display vs. the camera filming it...

was the same for old CRT's when filmed, they looked like they were 'scanning'
