Hi guys. On the general Tvr gossip page I posted my 1990 Tvr 390se wedge with a Healey body on it, project, hope it doesn't upset you guys to much! But I really do think its worth the sacrifice.

A) Anyway reading some of the discussions, I noticed 390s may have LSD on them, mine is hard to turn the rear wheels by hand, which points the right direction, but is there another clue, like a part number to look out for?
B) do Austin princess 4 pot callipers fit straight on these cars?
C) as this is a NGk engined one, what clutch did they use, someone mentioned they are heavier than 350
D) any idea where the 3 matching pedal rubbers came from.?

Also due to the nature of build I will have quite an amount of parts for sale, like all panels, boot ,bonnet ,doors with glass the roof ,spoilers for boot, front side and rear , all electric motors, electric mirrors , rad, front and rear body clips cut away from the tub, lights, pods, and motors for, and a few interior bits and pieces. Which I may eBay

I have 4 wheels too, but won't be on the market till the project is complete as i need them to wheel the car about. The wheels are all original lattice Tvr complete and renovated a couple of years back with 1 /4 worn Yokohama tyres, one needs pumping up every month so it may have a valve issue, as I can't see a nail in it.. I'm in mid Wales

I can certainly confirm that the 4 pot Princess mod goes straight on but you will need:

  • Caliper spacers to suit the Granada vented discs
  • Brake pipe T piece or other plumbing to suit the 2 feed calipers
Bleeding them is a challenge but otherwise a good mod. If you look on my profile for forum threads i put it up on here some time ago

Nice mod for the chassis, always liked the Sebring shape and with RV8 power it will sound awsome! Post it up on here when your done fella!

If the diff is an LSD it shouldn't be any harder to turn than usual; it's probably the brakes dragging. The usual clue is that both wheels turn in the same direction; a non-LSD will make the wheels turn in opposite directions.
Salisbury LSDs were called 'Powr-Lok' and there should be a stamped metal tag secured by one of the rear cover bolts that has 'PL' stamped on it. There's usually another nearby that will have the diff. ratio, say '3.54' for 3.54:1. Mine has the optional 3.31.

Clutch could be anything from standard Rover SD1 to something race-biased, depends on what was fitted. Rumour has it that certain models of the LDV Sherpa van (ambulances were V8s, amongst others) ran an uprated clutch and this was the one used on the 390SE... but others will tell you differently.

If you're chopping the shell up, I'll take the front and rear spoilers (front airdam and rear lower wing), please smile

Pedal rubbers are probably either Rover SD1 or Ford of some sort.

So did TVR, well, with the later rubbers of the same style, not sure if they were fitted to the wedges but the griff's certainly had them.

My 1982 2.8 has matching TVR pedal rubbers, wouldn't like to comment on their orginality, but they are very worn and look damned old, but 30years?

Right guys you going to throw rocks at me! I read the boot badge again, and its not a 390se its a 350se. which of course changes features on panels somewhat. And Yes yes yes its only now I know its one of the last 25, but it was very cheap and the parts package was tremendous, which is the unfortunate problem with a lot of good cars at present. a bit like e-types in the 70s they were giving them away. But in my defence TVRs will only now gain real value when most of them are long gone crashed or scrapped. Which can be said of most other fine sports cars now and through the years. However this one will live on to fight another day as a show / track car, be it with a different body on, and the TVR elements will be fully rebuilt. Again the parts I will not use, have been saved and will go on to keep other cars alive.

Answers on a brick please!

Ah, the 350SE was the one nobody wants, with the weedy engine and wonky chassis made from old Coke cans.

Tell you what, I'll give you £100 for it to save you the trouble, and I'm robbin' meself, no really I am biggrin

I thought a 1990 390SE sounded a bit odd, seeing as they didn't produce any after 88/89. rolleyes

Hi Graham, my mates 390SE S1 is an 88, E reg and my 390SE S2, 88, F reg. So they most of stopped in 89.

Yeah, my first one was a 1988 red S2 on an E plate, second one was also a 1988 S2, but on an F plate. smile

400SEs took over in 1989....and I had a 1990 model.

Can't say I'm happy about one of the rarest Wedges being lost, but it's done now.

Regarding the stone/rock/brick throwing, would there be much interest in swapping the car out for a normal 350i?

Edit: Ah, I see you're already a fair way through the build. Nevermind!

Hi wedge, best keep the £100 for a new handbag, you must have worn that one out on that quote alone!!!:-)

Understand an opinion, so Im interested on how that statement was sourced, so please expand on why is the later 350se 3.9 litre NCK hotwire engine weedy compared to the earlier 390 3.9 litre, or anything else before it?

And the chassis (coke cans), was it thinner walled, crap metal, or a different design, if lighter then that suits me sir! And did the 390 of anything before have the “A" frame suspension like the 350se?

PS:- Checked mine out 2 months ago on a flat bed and after 23 years its not twisted any more that 5mm corner to corner, but thats a hand made chassis for you, mind you granted the whole thing felt overweight to drive, very yank tank like, so the engine didnt come to life till after 50mph, and then it pulled like a train, still the weight is now falling off it.

It was Number 12. Sold to me with no mot and a shopping list of things to do to get it through, once it came apart it got a little worse, but on balance still soundish, sad but true. Anyway, lots of parts already reserved, so i will review the list when i get home as Im away on business at present. Email me if you can think of something you need, I can say yes or no, no worries
