I'v been toying with the idea of an 80s classic sports car for ages now as a 2nd toy. The 944 is really ticking my boxes right now and making me all excited at the thought of it.

It wouldnt be used for more than 1000 miles a year and I quite like the idea of having a project car so wouldn't be too fussed about it being perfect.

What are the spares situation like? I'm guessing their are reasonably over engineered and well put together?

Porsche 944's don't talk - if you want a talking car from the 80's I would suggest a Maestro.

If he wants a talking car, then an Audi Quattro might be more of his thing if he was looking at 944s originally

A very well balanced car transaxle giving it near 50:50 weight distribution.

The S2 is a 3ltr 4 cylinder
Turbo
Turbo S
Lux
S

Problem areas or costly ones are the sills so if they are shot its c£2k.
The Turbo engine is very strong and can deliver 500bhp so keep it std and it will keep going.

The S2 is very pricy to modify if that's what your looking for but it has a lot of low down torque and very linear power.

Red seems to fade badly

Spares is mostly ok, a lot of third parties in the US now make pattern parts fortunately.

Regarding your second sentence, it depends what you are used to.
Will also depend on if you buy one that's been looked after for 25 years or not.

Wow didn't know Audi did a talking car. I do remember 1 motoring correspondant (Chris Godfrey?) hanging upside down by the seatbelt having rolled a Maestro on a road test whilst the car kept repeating 'Warning - Low oil pressure'.

thanks for sharing that one, priceless. I looked at 944s back in the 90s as an everyday driver, still regret not doing it they are a simple car with all the basics right. The turbos in Uk all had a/c as standard. It seems a shame to hardly use it as practicality was their USP. I remember a lot of owners were not too pleased when Porsche pulled the plug on them, a 911 doesnt work the same.

I like the idea of a 944, but corrosion does my head in. I think most of them were built at an Audi plant and given the way some of their 80s galvanised stuff resists rust I find it disappointing.

I think if you search here there's also a red 924 with images of rust that's getting done. I think on the 924 SOTW, or the PPC magazine guide on 924s they said they're more rust resistant than 944s.

Yes, Maestro used a lady from New Zealand called Nicolette McKenzie who was also in an early episode of the soap set on a ship, Triangle. She was also in a few films

s_m, your knowledge on this matter is impressive.

I hope Patrizia Lipp was holding up a ghetto blaster playing a recording of her and that wasn't the size of the speech synthesis box that WR Quattros had.
