The brake light switch on my SE went in France last year, cleaned it with some WD40 and its was fine until last week. So just got a new one from Ford (it's a Ford unit on the SE), was £6 including a new fixing as the old one was a little lose.
Don't know if it's the same on yours but if so you could switch on the ignition and then short the two switch terminals directly together to see if it's the switch that's gone. You can reach it easily - directly above the pedal.

Hi everyone! Taking a break from working on the road to see if my house is going to survive IVAN the hurican! Anyway, WD40 is great for little things like this... if you will add just a touch of speed grease to the prongs, it will help stop moisture and prevent the future problem! i did this last year with several connectors giving me fits in the alabama humidity... not one issue has returned!
