Electric bikes

I have a heart condition which prevents me being able to cycle uphill other than where slopes are minimal. However my wife and daughter are very keen to take a cycling tour around Annecy and I dearly want to accompany them. An option I hope is that if I use an electric bike it will take enough of the strain to allow me so to do. There is no issue with cycling on the flat (or downhill!). My question is whether these bikes provide any substantial aid to the rider and what the effective range can be (I know that will likely vary due to rider weight, terrain and so on but I would appreciate any kind of advice). Thanks in advance for any responses.
There is a cycle route around lake Annecy that is more or less flat.
IMHO I would avoid the ebay electric bikes. I bought one for my dad but the bike was very heavy and the assistance really designed for the flat. On any hill it had inadequate torque.
I would look at the more expensive german kits that you can order with lower speed but higher torque and retrofit to an existing bike.
