Shame about the wheels. And the de-badging. Oh, and... "THE CAR WAS DECLARED AT A CAT D AS THE RS4 MIRRORS HAD BEEN STOLEN 28/08/2009"

To get declared a Cat D write-off, presumably the stolen mirrors were solid gold... or am I missing something?!

In that case at £17K it seems unlikely however I've thought for a while that this could be the case for some cars with some Merc mirrors at £1K each then a 10 year old £3K Merc could be such a write off.

Thefts of certain components on RS cars, the optional bucket seats(which this one doesn't seem to have) especially, are sadly not that rare.

It being a writeoff for having only the mirrors nicked is very hard to believe, obviously.

I see this car frequently on the way to work - how the owner drives it and how it sounds when cold are both bloody awful.

On the write-off front, if they gauged/damaged both doors to get the mirrors off it wouldn't surprise if it was a write-off.

Everything about that advert seems to scream wrongness. Never mind that you couldnt drive it without looking like it was an Exeo with a bodykit.....

More likely to be the case.

It was cat d'd in 2009, it would have been 3 years old, so like to have been worth at least £30000.

Could the owner have had a like for like hire car for his own loss? With parts on back order, six weeks @ £300/day would be £12k. Selling the salvage for even £10k less than paid out but only paying a week's hire would break even.

Most likely bullst though.

Googling the number shows it's a trader using PH to post private adverts.

This.

The local scrappy often had stolen recovered cars where the insurers had already paid out. Occasionally they had bits missing, like a Capri 2800 with no interior or minor damage: an RS1600 turbo with four broken wheels like it had been up a curb at speed though what that would do to the suspension and mounts is anybody's guess.

The advert looks pretty odd to me.

This just looks like my perfect car, everything I look for in one place!
Stupidly overpriced? Tick.
Full service history which actually means "hasn't seen a garage for three and a half years until I got it done last month"? Tick.
Written off so will always be a nightmare to sell on? Tick.
Nonsense reason for car been written off? Tick.

I'm sold, where do I sign?

Also:

Advertiser waxes lyrical about how fantastic the car is and is the best he's ever had etc.. etc... but then offers no reason for selling and is willing to consider part exchanges which has me asking " What the fk is wrong with it?" Tick.

His spelling and grammar is poor too. If I was buying a 17k car I'd like the advertiser to take the time to check his spelling.

Yep - and having looked through some of those ads I think I'll offer to P\Ex a keyboard with a working CAPS LOCK key for one of his lovely cars of which he is "CURRENTLY THE JOYFUL OWNER"

Err, without wanting to sound completely racist (& you just know anyone who comes out with that statement is going to sound like a full on BNP member extremely soon) when I see a "storied" car advertised by someone with an "ethnic" sounding name, I don't even bother looking any further.

Now, I'm sure there's no demographic results on the most likely scammers out there but having had vast experience of buying & selling performance cars I simply refuse to get involved nowadays.

The risks seem to go up exponentially when combined with certain Yorkshire, Lancashire or Midlands postcodes.

Apart from that I'm actually pretty left wing in my political beliefs y'know? smile

Last few words in advert say it all to me

'PLEASE NO SCAM ARTIST'

No thanks.

Good luck with what I wonder?

I also wonder why he bothered to include that dreadful service history!
