I guess these are MK 1 Golf based.

They are growing on me, and I have thoughts of getting one for a bit of fun this summer.

Something easy and not too expensive for my local Indy to fix.

So what are they like? A Golf GTI in different clothes? Fun, and well engineered, or boring expensive moneypits?

They are inherently reliable but definitely a car from a different era.

Gearing is quite low making motorway driving quite tiring. Parts for them are hard to source, that are Scirocco specific (like interior parts and body panels). And they rust... big time.

VW have, in the last couple of years, setup a Classic Parts department who are starting to hoard parts and even get some parts remanufactured where possible so owning an old VW is getting a little easier finally.

I have a good friend who is a diehard Mk1 enthusiast.. If you get no other feedback let me know and I will ask him for advice on things to look out for.

Thanks for that. I found a nice one about 6 months ago at a local back street dealer. It was only about 300 quid, but as I had 2. Cars at the time, I thought better of it.

I saw the car driving past locally the other day, and that rekindled my interest.

It would be purely a bit of fun for the summer. I have no practical capabilities.

My first car was a 1986 mkII GTX and I loved it. Golf GTi performance and reliability in a good looking coupe body. I thought they looked a little 'DeLorean' in appearance. The mkII are also galvanised iirc. Haven't seen a rusty one really.

If you have no experience of welding then you really need to look at the car in terms of rust, as mentioned above. I had a GLi when they weren't that old, and even then the rust had started to take hold in both the front bulkhead and rear quarter panels. However mechanically the things just run and run, mine went through 100,000 fine with just regular oil and filter changes, and I would imagine that with so many mechanical components being shared with the Golf that parts would still be available.

Sure that was a MK1 and not a MK2? MK1's really don't come up for sale much and seem to be accumulating in value.. so 300 quid seems very cheap - unless it was a rot box or had major engine problems.

Avoid a GLS reg number OSR 890R if you ever come across it - that was mine when I was young, and the sticker in the window about having one careful driver and 7 rotten ones was actually true.

It was rotten and bodged in a bad way. The engine went but was replaced with a newer one. It had crashed through a fence. It had a bus run into the back of it - their insurance payou fr the repair paid for a holiday in Benidorm instead! It ran into the back of another car after the clutch cable pulled through the bulkhead. It went on fire several times because the fuel pipe fell off the carb and pumped petrol onto the exhaust manifold.

Nonetheless, I thought it was a great-looking car, it drove well (for the period), and I'd have another in a heartbeat if I could find a facelift Storm.

It was a MK2 on An H plate. I'd have loved a MK1. But canly only find one online, and its not in great nick to my untrained eye anyway.

Ah ok smile

Well if you're after a MK2 then, I don't believe they have the same kinds of rust issues at all.

Head over to the Scirocco Register site and checked their classified - usually quite a few for sale and normally pretty well priced. I know several people with MK2's and again would be happy to get a "need to know" list sorted for you.

I know where there is a 2 owner B plate MK2 GT which has been parked up in a garage since 1989. I went to look at it last year with a view to getting it back on the road - only the owner couldn't find the key to the lock to open the garage door!

It last saw the light of day a few years ago and was (apparently) in good nick.

The only issue I have is that the owner is the sister of my (now) ex girlfriend.

Mk1 and Mk2 Sciroccos are both based on the mk1 golf GTI, all suspension and mechanical bits being interchangeable.

Mk1 roccos rust, a lot!

They made the mk2 up to about '92, just before catalytic converters were needed, and the mk2s are normally very good for not rusting.

I've got a '90 G reg GTX injection, and it is rust free.

They are easy to work on and generally reliable, the injection models using Bosch K jet all the way through production.

The Mk1's are really pretty, a guy had one near me but it was a total rust bucket. Wasn't a real fan of the Mk2's but, I was drooling over this one earlier today. Shame the Borbet A's aren't included:
