Just been watching The Saint on ITV 4. Lots of classics in this one as Templar turns his hand to rally driving. The story is a bit corny but there are loads of cars from a bygone era. Repeats at 0200 tomorrow or catch it on Itv player.

Just watching it now on itv4+1
Think it was filmed in 1968 or so and the car in the lead is a mk 1 Cortina which I thought would have been pensioned off by then ?
The car Templar is driving is a err....................?

The most impressive car for me is the Marcos at the start of the program. All from a time when life was more simple but the shape of that car has stood the test of time so well.

TVR Vixen S1 Produced in 1967 - 1968 i think. Ties in with your theory about when it was filmed. That was the last ever episode of the Saint BTW. Used to love it as a kid. The Ian Ogilvy series was crap compared to Roger Moore IMHO.

Thanks for that I fleetingly thought it may have been a mock up thing as the lights looked like they were nicked off the back off a mk1 Cortina and there were side vents that looked like off an aston (I know I know naïve I'm sorry)
Again thanks I shall be googling for images

They were - the taillights on some TVRs were Cortina Mk.1 units.

I saw this as well, the part i particulary liked was Simon Templar driving the fastest car in the rally and struggling to overtake a van.

Mr Laker was a true wealthy engineer driving a Jensen FF

I always forget the wider Granturas went on to be Vixens

Which Granturas were narrower?
rolleyes perhaps I meant longer, whatever, I usually think the Vixens are Ms and then when I see a M I realise they're not

Vixen1700 will know the details of the cars wink

Good for a laugh, I might take up this rallying lark it looks fun.

I think some of the filming was actually genuine, the shot of the Healey in the Forest, looked like it was from the mid 60's RAC, possibly some of the Mini shots too.

As an aside, there is also an episode where ST is an F1 driver and IIRC he is driving in Graham Hill's colours & real GP footage is used on the long shots.

1 MOK is still current and is on a Range Rover. I wonder if the owner knows its heritage?

The rally looks like they really are cars that Joe Public could buy and drive - great fun smile.

For the most part they were back then, it only started to change in the late 60's when 'special stage' rallying took hold.

If you take a look at the Historic events such as the Rally of the Tests, which take place these days you will see they are pretty much the same as the event depicted in those clips. Without the silliness obviously..!

Had to laugh at continuity back then. Some villain has a Roller and after a short while, they blow up a car that is plainly an old scrapper like a 50s Austin - keeps the budget down but it's part of the charm.
