Cayenne in the snow
Discussion
How is your Cayenne tackling the snow blizzard we're currently getting? The main roads around my area are gritted well, but my road doesn't get many cars so it's all pretty fresh. Was driving this morning and it seems to handle ok, but it does slide around a little bit. I'm sure the 20" wheels and 'all round' tyres aren't the best combination for this type of weather. I have the Goodyear Wranger tyres I think.

I just bought a Cayenne turbo 957 last month, came with 21 inch tires. After the snow storm we had in Lebanon last week the car was all over the place and couldn't corner without becoming part of the scenery. I bought second hand set of 19" rims and fitted them with 4 new Pirellis P 0 snow and ice and it is an entirely different experience. Now I go out on purpose to enjoy the handling.

I don't know about the Goodyears but they look ok.
I also found out that the new Cayenne 2011 and up handle better on icy roads as my wife has one and we use it to go on ski trips above 2000 meters where the roads and permanently iced over in the winter, it corners like on rails and is fitted with 18" pirellis snow and ice too.
What Cayenne model do you drive?

My 12 MY-3.0 is not good in the snow, it just slides round, have to treat the throttle like egg shells. The 3.0D as far as 4 wheel drive systems go is pretty basic, I recall they done away with the locking diff to save weight…mmm
The 4.2D and Turbo have completely different system.
Are snow tyres available in 21”?

Almost before the first snowflake had hit the groung my local OPC had an email round saying now winter has set in would you like a set of snow trires for £1500.
Winter will be over by next weekend. Wonder if they would refit the summer tyres or insist on a new set as "we don't fit used tyres"

Ours is a 2009 Cayenne diesel and on 18"winter wheels/tyres, it is very different than driving on its 20" summer wheels and tyres. Very confidence inspiring!
We bought ours through an Opc and fitted them back in November.
They are very capable vehicles but on winter tyres it is truly brilliant.

I had Goodyear Wranglers on my Discovery and though M&S rated, in snow they were very poor for traction and just as importantly, stopping, which 4wd does nothing for.
It now has Vredestein Wintrac Extremes which have made a hell of a difference - as have Continental WinterContacts in the past.

Snow tires are available in 21" but they are ridiculously expensive and have practicaly no grip at all. The 18", after after having driven many cars from range rovers to landcruisers, have the best grip by far.The 4.2D and Turbo have completely different system.

18" are the best for grip on snow but if your Cayenne is fitted with extended wheel arches the wheels look skinnyWe bought ours through an Opc and fitted them back in November.

Thanks for the replies!
I've got a 2005 S Cayenne. Maybe it is on braking that i'm noticing the instability (one of the comments above about Wranglers). I think i'll try to see the snow through and maybe pick up some 18" wheels and snow tyres in the summer. Sounds like it's a whole different driving experience with them on.
On another note, the heated seats and steering wheel are lovely aren't they.
